Byram Hills 15 - Rye 2

Byram Hills blew out previously undefeated Rye on Tuesday with an impressive 15-2 win, handing the Garnets their first loss since last year’s Class A state title game. Frankie Vesuvio tossed a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and broke the Byram school record for home runs in a season with his sixth of the year, but the entire lineup contributed. All nine starters had at least one hit and one RBI for the Bobcats, who upset the No. 5 team in the PBR New York Top 25 Power Rankings.

After closing for Byram (15-4) last season, Vesuvio has been converted to a starter this year and improved his command. He threw 66 of his 85 pitches for strikes on Tuesday, including first-pitch strikes to 20 of the 27 batters that he faced. He did not issue a walk, giving up two runs in the seventh after an error was committed.

The Bobcats knocked Rye starter Tim DeGraw out with a 5-0 lead and one out in the top of the third. The senior right-hander had not allowed an earned run this season entering the game, but gave up five on seven hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Vesuvio led off the sixth with a homer over the 360-foot sign in dead center, which sparked an eight-run inning that put Rye (16-1) away. Vesuvio finished a game-high three RBI, Tommy Gagliardi had a game-high four hits and Kellen Hatheway hit a two-run homer. Byram pounded out a total of 19 hits.

They’ll play again on Thursday at Byram with the league title on the line. Rye RHP George Kirby will likely face Byram RHP Matt Gertz.
