PBR Spotlight Game: Walpole vs Newton

Senior RHP Jack Donnelly (SNHU commit) proved to be too much on the mound for the Tigers of Newton North, as they fell to the Walpole Rebels 5-1 on a humid afternoon in Newtonville.

Donnelly went the distance allowing six hits (all singles) and one earned run, while striking out six and walking two.

He was helped offensively by junior right fielder Liam McCabe, who had a two-run double and senior left fielder Jack Lavanchy, with two hits including a double and RBI.

Senior RHP Theo Resnick took the loss for the Tigers despite not allowing a hit until the 5th inning. He was pulled with two outs in the 6th after allowing four hits, five runs (four earned) with three strikeouts and four walks (three of the walks came around to score). Sophomore RHP Jimmy Hodgson came on in relief, getting the final out of the 6th and pitching a scoreless 7th.

The day started positive for Walpole in the 1st as Resnick walked both McCabe and sophomore second baseman Charlie Anditore to start the game.

After a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position, junior shortstop Ian Fair reached on the first of two errors by Tiger second baseman Kane Medina to load the bases with nobody out. Then, junior third baseman Nate Porack grounded out to third allowing McCabe to come across and score the first run. Senior third baseman Nick Shea was next with a fly ball to center, which was plenty deep enough to score Anditor and giving the Rebels a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers would strike back with their only run in the bottom half of the 1st.

Leadoff hitter and junior Eric Mah singled to left. After Donnelly retired the next two, he hit junior catcher Thomas Joyce, setting the stage for senior right fielder Curtis Beatrice. He turned on an inside pitch and delivered a single into left, scoring Mah and cutting the lead in a half after the 1st.

After Walpole was set down in order in the top of the 2nd, the Tigers were primed to score again in the bottom half.

Senior left fielder Mikey Barbieri walked and junior DH Phil Barnet was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Medina then dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. However, Donnelly bore down and recorded a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.

Meanwhile, Resnick was cruising through the Rebel lineup, retiring 12 straight through the top of the 4th, without allowing a hit.

Walpole would bust open their lead in the 5th, starting with a one out walk to catcher Matt Ordway. Lavanchy then got the Rebels in the hit column by driving a double to right. McCabe was next and he took an outside pitch and drove it to left over the head of Barbieri, scoring both runners and extending the lead to 4-1.

The Tigers again had a good chance to score in their half of the 5th after a one out single to right by senior center fielder Ben Porter. A few pitches later Porter stole second and Joyce walked following a ten pitch at bat. Once again though, Donnelly stepped it up with guys on and induced a fly out and ground out to end the inning.

The Rebels would add one more in the top of the 6th on a two out single by sophomore center fielder Andrew Moone. The DH, senior James Newman, then reached on a two base error by Newton North senior third baseman Christian Cox. Senior Drew Naismith pinch hit for Ordway and drew a walk to load the bases.

Lavanchy capped his day with a run scoring single to center, making it 5-1 and chasing Resnick from the game.

Donnelly cruised through the final two innings, allowing just an infield single in route to a complete game victory.
