PBR Spotlight Game: Lexington vs Arlington

The Lexington Minutemen were quite dominant in their home victory against Middlesex League rival Arlington, defeating the Spy Ponders 8-0.

Junior RHP Jeff Costello was fantastic on the mound, allowing only two hits while striking out three and walking just one.

Senior RHP Dan Shaw took the loss for Arlington. Shaw pitched five innings, giving up eight hits, seven runs (four earned) with four strikeouts and three walked. He also hit two batters on the afternoon.

Lexington senior centerfielder and three-hole hitter Connor Murphy highlighted the offense with two hits, including a double and 2 RBIs.

After both teams were retired in order in the first inning, Lexington got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 2nd.

Freshman right fielder Ryan Cervone was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to third when sophomore DH Trevor McGovern singled to right. Cervone came in to score a batter later after an attempted steal of 2nd base by McGovern tipped off the glove of Spy Ponder senior shortstop Ryan Hood. The error gave the Minutemen a 1-0 lead after two.

In the bottom of the 3rd, sophomore catcher Nico Frelick doubled with one out. Murphy then walked before Cervone singled, scoring Frelick. McGovern then drew a walk and junior leftfielder Justin Arnold singled to left, bringing Murphy home. The ball was misplayed by leftfielder Emmit Rojo for Spy Ponder allowing both Cervone and McGovern to score and after 3 in was 5-0 Lexington.

Costello led off the 4th by getting hit by a pitch and he scored two batters later when Murphy doubled.

Lexington would add another in the 5th after three straight singles by Cervone, McGovern and Arnold. After a double play, McGovern would come around to score on a wild pitch by Shaw.

This would be the end of the day for Shaw as Collin Bailey-Healy came on for the final inning.

He walked Costello to start the 6th and after a passed ball, Murphy again came through with a single to centerfield, scoring Costello and capping the scoring at 8-0.

Costello did not need much offense on this day as he dominated the Spy Ponders, pounding the strike zone and earning the win.
