Today we take an in-depth look at the Midwest Nationals Gray 16U team - a talented group of class of 2017/2018 prospects with players from Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.
RHP/IF AJ Archambo, Bartlesville HS (OK), Class of 2017
Archambo is a tall, athletic 6-foot-2, 155-pound right-handed pitcher and infielder. Played varsity basketball and baseball as a freshman for Bartlesville. Swings it well, will play corner infield, outfield, and pitch for the Nationals Gray this summer with a spell or two in the middle infield. He demonstrates plus infield actions and is very competitive. He’s just now finding his body again after a growth spurt this past spring. Arm is strong and his throws have carry. Very competitive and instinctive player.
C/IF Cade Cavalli, Bixby HS (OK), Class of 2017
Cavalli is an athletic 5-foot-11, 150-pound catcher/middle infielder. Just now starting to mature physically. Played varsity basketball at Bixby and did not join baseball team until after Spring Break. Played middle infield and hit leadoff for varsity team once joining it. Long, loose, strong arm with carry to it. Plus middle infield actions and will play shortstop and catch through the summer and close some on the mound. Athletic move at the ball without much swing and miss. Has an advanced feel for the game.
RHP/OF Mehki Edwards, New Lima HS (OK), Class of 2017
Edwards is a 5-foot-7, 135-pound switch hitting outfielder that can really run, good instinctive outfield player and has arm strength. Just starting to mature so lots of upside. Fast arm, ball has carry and doing well learning to hit from the left side (only a year and half into switch hitting). Dad played at Seminole JC and Texas Pan American.
RHP/IF Brett Hammit, Nixa HS (MO), Class of 2018
Hammit is an athletic 5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed pitcher and infielder who will just be a freshman in high school next year. Just starting to mature physically. Lots of upside in his frame. Brother is a 6-foot-4 outfielder at Hutchinson Community College. Will play mostly second base and outfield for the Nationals Gray this summer. Athletic somewhat raw approach at the plate. Has real bat speed that will play well for him in the coming years. Very instinctive middle infielder with great range. Good arm, good runner and will be very, very interesting to watch as he matures.
RHP/UT Adam Link, Kickapoo HS (MO), Class of 2017
Link is a 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher and utility player for the Nationals Gray. He plays football, basketball and baseball for Kickapoo. Athleticism translates well to the baseball diamond. This summer has played outfield, first-base and pitched. Has a sharp breaking ball on the mound and is very competitive.
RHP/OF Connor Sechler, Bolivar HS (MO), Class of 2017
The 6-foot-1, 140-pound Sechler will play varsity football as a quarterback and varsity baseball for Bolivar as a sophomore. Electric arm for the frame and shows advanced mound presence. Dad is 6-foot-5 and projects to be tall with a wiry, long frame that will bold well for him in the near future. Athletic on the mound, clean and free delivery. Plays outfield when not pitching for the Nationals Gray. Throws as hard as or harder than anyone on this team and his breaking ball has a chance to develop into a plus pitch. Has command of all of his pitches. Runs well.
RHP/OF Justin Smith, Bixby HS (OK), Class of 2017
Smith is a 6-foot, 155-pound right-handed pitcher and outfielder for the Nationals Gray. He has shown a strong arm on the mound and advanced feel for a breaking ball. Strong kid, close to a plus runner, swings it well, a little rigid in his actions but very competitive and a player to keep a close eye on as he develops.
RHP/UT Brett Standlee, Jenks HS (OK), Class of 2017
Standlee is a physically impressive 6-foot-3, 185-pound athlete that can play multiple positions. Will play Varsity baseball and football at Jenks. He can catch, play corner infield, outfield and pitch – this summer he has performed well at each. Likely will become a cornerstone player for Jenks in the years to come. Has a chance to be very special. At the plate he shows a very mature move at the ball, has power and does not swing and miss much. Fast arm, good velocity that projects really well – he already throws his slider at 78 - 80 and has a chance to throw very hard down the road. Dad is 6-foot-5 and pitched in college.
RHP/UT Kyle Stringer, Labette County HS (KS), Class of 2017
Stringer is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed pitcher and utility player. He’s a very physical offensive player with legitimate power that has shown the ability to hit a fastball a long ways. Hit 4-hole for his high school varsity team as a freshman and will hit there primarily for the Nationals Gray this summer. Coming off an arm injury to his elbow from early spring and will primarily be used as a corner infielder/outfielder. Will resume pitching in the fall. On the mound he has very firm stuff and has developed an effective 2-seam fastball.
RHP/UT Jake Terry, Sand Springs HS (OK), Class of 2017
Terry is a 6-foot-3, 170-pound multi-positional athlete. Played varsity baseball at Sand Springs as a freshman. He beat Jenks (OK) and Fayetteville (AR) among others as a freshman on the mound. Big, strong kid that is still one of the youngest on the Nationals Gray team. Throws very hard, good change up and is developing feel for a breaking ball. Will play corner infield/outfield when not pitching and will catch some this summer. Some power in the bat and is still developing a consistent move at the ball. Runs good and has a big arm.
RHP/SS Nick Wohlbold, Rockbridge HS (MO), Class of 2017
Wohlbold is a very interesting and athletic 6-foot, 160-pound right-handed pitcher/shortstop. Played some varsity basketball and baseball as a freshman. Good runner, strong arm, swings it really well and shows power to all fields. His infield actions do not yet match his athleticism but that will likely change as he develops. Appears to be very driven and has good body awareness with the ability to make adjustments quickly. On the mound he is firm, has a breaking ball with shape and competes hard.
