CARY, NC – Every year at USA Baseball’s Tournament of Stars there’s at least one showstopper, a prospect who clearly emerges from the rest of the top-level prospects at the prestigious event. After the second day of game play Thursday, LHP Jason Groome (IMG Academy, FL) left little doubt as to who was the biggest winner at USA Baseball’s National Training Complex.

Groome, who’s currently ranked No. 3 overall, may have elevated himself as the top prep prospect in the 2016 class after his three-inning stint for the Stars team. Listed at 6-foot-6, 220 pounds, the Vanderbilt recruit’s first fastball checked in at 97 mph, and he proceeded to settle in at 93-95 for the next two innings, and finished 91-93 in the third. Moreover, Groome generates his premium velocity with such ease that it looks like he is playing a game of catch.

The New Jersey native pounded the strike zone with both his fastball and curveball, which ranged between 75-79 mph. In his three shutout innings, Groome struck out six, walked one and yielded three hits. Athletic and fluid, Groome appears to have more in the tank, too, as he is still filling into his frame.
