RHP Matt Kellis (right) from CBC is set for a break out senior season, a season that he has been waiting for his entire high school career. Following a successful summer season, Kellis will be part of a CBC pitching staff that looks to be one of the strongest in the state next season and help put him on the radar of many colleges in the Midwest.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Kellis impressed at the Preseason ID Showcase in February with consistent upper 80’s fastballs and a breaking ball that is developing into a legitimate out pitch.

Kellis has steadily moved up on the Class of 2013 rankings (currently ranked No. 21), and as he continues to progress, he had the ability to be one of the top pitchers statewide.

We recently caught up with Kellis to get some thoughts on where he is in the recruiting process.

PBR: Talk a little about the CBC HS team from last season, and what you expect going into your senior season

Kellis: Last year’s CBC High School team was a journey ready to be set. We had a very young and talented team that was not yet proven. This upcoming 2013 High School season will be one to watch.  We’ve got all nine starters, including a deep pitching staff, returning to the field.  Because we won the conference title, we will get everyone’s best game.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player?

Kellis: My ability to successfully pitch allows me the opportunity to lead the team from the bump.  I enjoy having the ball in my hands during big game situations.

PBR: What aspect of your game do you believe needs the most improvement?

Kellis: I continue to try to improve my pitching mechanics, which will help me to grow and succeed at the next level.  

PBR: What have are your expectations for the recruiting process?

Kellis: I’m excited about the process. The conversations with coaches are something new to me.  I enjoy it and I can’t wait to see where this leads and how things work out.

PBR: What type of program would you like to play at? What is most important to you: Caliber of program, coaching staff, academics, etc…?

Kellis: I would like to go to a school with not only great baseball history, but one that will also help me grow academically and personally.

PBR: What schools are you most interested in right now, and why?

Kellis: Schools within the Midwest region are a big option for me because I’d like my parents to be able to see me play.

PBR: What were your personal goals for the 2012 season and were they met?

Kellis: I felt like I accomplished the goal of being a successful starting varsity pitcher on my CBC High School team. I went into every game with a plan of making good pitches, improving my strikeouts and reducing my walks.

PBR: What team do you play for in the summer?

Kellis: 18U Rawlings Titans coached by Ben Margalski

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher/hitter that you have faced?

Kellis: As a pitcher, the toughest hitter that I have faced was Brandon Gutzler. We play on the same summer team and we know each other really well.

PBR: What is your fondest memory or highlight from your 2012 baseball season (High School or Summer)?

Kellis: During the CBC High School season, I was fortunate to get the chance to help my team in Metro Catholic Conference title game against DeSmet. Getting the start and the win was something I will always remember.

PBR: What is your most memorable moment in baseball so far in your life?

Kellis: Being the winning pitcher during the 15U Triple Crown National Championship game in Denver, Colorado has to be one of my fondest memories.

PBR: What are your thoughts on the implementation of BBCOR bats from both a hitting and pitching perspective?

Kellis: The game had changed in a whole new way. I feel like these bats make baseball a more team based game.  Even still, good pitchers will make good pitches and good hitters will get good.
