Player Spotlight: SS Gavin Jones (Smith Cotton, 2017)

Gavin Jones (Smith-Cotton, 2017) is a 6-foot-1 190-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. He led the Tigers to a 27-5 record last spring and played summer baseball in Southern California with the SoCal Bombers.  Jones was also a member of the Missouri Junior Sunbelt team. 

Jones turned in an impressive work out at the Top Prospect Games in early August.  He ran a 7.03 60 and 4.43 home-to-first.  On the infield, he has athletic actions, fielding the ball with fluid footwork in sync with transfer and release. He has soft hands and an 80 mph positional velo.   

At the plate, he has smooth rhythm in his stance, a short stride and efficient load.  He has a quick bat with loose hands and level path.  He has a gap-to-gap approach with power to both gaps. 

Currently, Jones is preparing for fall baseball and his senior season of high school baseball.  Here is a look inside the recruitment of Gavin Jones.

PBR: Are you looking for anything in particular in a school? (Example: high academics, certain academic program, local, etc.)

Jones: I am looking for a school that has a good Business Marketing program along with baseball.

PBR: How did you do your junior year? What were your high school statistics? And how did your team do?

Jones: I had a solid junior year but didn't reach a lot of my goals. I batted about 350 with 33 runs and 25 rbi's. Our team had a good year going 27-5 but lost 1-0 to Jefferson City in the second round of districts.

PBR: What are you goals for your senior season?

Jones: My goals would be to win a district championship and be nominated as an all state player. I'd like to prove a lot of people wrong about our team and really turn some heads.

PBR: What travel team do you play for? Are you playing fall ball with a team?

Jones: I played for the Southern California Bombers, Missouri Sunbelt team and Sedalia Senior Legion this past summer. I will play fall ball with So Cal Bombers and Sedalia Bombers

PBR: Do you play any other sports?

Jones: I've played Basketball for the past three years but plan to focus on baseball this year.

PBR: What are your ACT and GPA?

Jones: My Act is a 24 and GPA is a 3.65
