Derrick Freeman (University City, 2015) is a 5-foot-10, 155-pound outfielder. Freeman had a great spring leading his team with a .500 batting average, and a .759 slugging percentage with four home runs. He was selected 1st Team All Suburban South in 2014, and is looking to repeat those numbers in the 2015 Season.
Freeman recently attended the Class of 2015 Prospect Games in Warrensburg on August 17. During game action, he had two singles, and a walk. He was on base three out of four plate appearances and a base stealing threat once he reached first. During the work out, Freeman posted the fastest home to first time at 4.07. He showed a simple, repeatable swing with an approach that uses the middle of the field. He had an 83 MPH positional velo from the outfield and an 87 MPH exit velo.
Freeman attended the NTIS Selection event on August 8-10 in St. Louis. At the event, he ran a 6.90 60 and showed good actions in the outfield.
He played for the St. Louis Gamers last summer and will playing for the St. Louis Sting this fall. Below is a look at what Freeman has going on.
PBR: What schools have expressed interest in you?
Freeman: I have received interest from Truman State University, Central Missouri University, Lincoln University, Harris–Stowe State University, and Rockhurst University.
PBR: Have you taken any visits, or have any visits scheduled in the near future? If so, what schools, and how recently?
Freeman: I have visited Truman State and I plan on visiting again. I also plan on visiting Lincoln University and Central Missouri University in the next month or so.
PBR: Are you looking for anything in particular in a school? (Example: high academics, certain academic program, local, etc.)
Freeman: I am looking for a school with a good school of business where I can study accounting and/or logistics. I would prefer to stay in Missouri or the boarding states but do not mind going further away from home.
PBR: How did you do your junior year? What were your statistics at University City High? And how did your team do?
Freeman: I had a good junior year of high school both in the class room and on the baseball field. I ended my junior year with a 3.6 GPA with AP courses. On the field I had a batting average of .500 with an on base percentage of .574. I also had a slugging percentage of .759 with 3 home runs, 15 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases. I was selected to the Suburban South All-Conference 1st Team. As a team we struggled, only two players returned from the 2013 varsity team. We were only able to win 2 games.
PBR: What are you goals for your senior season at University City?
Freeman: From my senior year I simply want to improve from my junior year. I strive to get a 4.0 GPA and have a better individual stat line on the baseball field while also helping my team win more games.
PBR: What travel team do you play for? Are you playing fall ball with a team?
Freeman: This fall and next summer I will be playing for the St. Louis Sting. For the previous four years I played for the St. Louis Gamers.
PBR: Do you play any other sports?
Freeman: I run cross country in the fall and made it to state the last two years. I also play basketball in the winter.
PBR: What are your ACT and GPA?
Freeman: I got a 22 on the ACT and have a 3.8 accumulative GPA.
