6.17 2016 Top Prospect Games: Outfield Analysis

On Tuesday, June 17 at the University of Central Missouri, Prep Baseball Report-Missouri held the 2016 Top Prospect Games for the top rising juniors in the state. We have taken a look at the pitchers and in the days to come, we will analyze the catchers and infielders. Today we take a look at the outfielders. Some players participated in multiple positions, but this is a look at just the outfield performance. The field of outfielders was loaded with lefty bats, good speed and power. Overall, the group was filled with highly projectable players that are currently having a nice summer season.
Top Prospects
Ryan Perkins (Francis Howell, OF, 2016)
Perkins is a physical 6-foot-2, 200-pound left hand hitting OF. Perkins posted the top velo in the outfield at 86 MPH and made mostly accurate throws. He has a quick hand-to-glove exchange and showed the ability to play through the ball with aggressive routes. At the plate, Perkins starts with an open stance and uses a strong lower have to generate power to both gaps. He has quick hands and level path with good extension. Perkins posted an event best 91 MPH exit velo, he ran a 4.30 home-to-first and 7.29 60.
Jacob Gonzales (Timberland, OF, 2016)
Gonzales is an athletic 5-foot-11 165-pound left handed hitting outfielder. Gonzales posted a 7.14 60 time and a 4.41 home-to-first. Combined with his speed, Gonzales posted one of the events top outfield velos at 83 MPH. He moves to the ball with a purpose and takes good angles to be behind the ball to make accurate throws with carry to his target. He has a fluid exchange with a quick arm. At the plate, Gonzales starts in an athletic position with a simple load. He produces a quick bath with level a bat path and good extension. He has a line drive approach to the middle of the field, squaring up the ball in batting practice. He had an exit velo of 85 MPH.
Tyler James (Lee’s Summit West, OF, 2016)
James is a strong 6-foot 180-pound OF. James has a positional velo of 80 MPH and has a loose over-the-top release. He has a fluid exchange plays through the ball well, making accurate throws. Offensively, James starts in a balanced position and creates good bat speed that produces power to his pull gap. He has mostly a pull approach and has an exit velo of 87 MPH. James runs a 7.06 60 and a 4.53 home-to-first.

Andrew DuPont (Lafayette, OF, 2016)
DuPont is an athletic 5-foot-11 165-pound left handed hitting outfielder. DuPont recorded a positional velo of 77 from the outfield, using a high 3/4 arm slot. He has aggressive actions to the ball and fluid, clean hand-to-glove exchange. He showed the ability to play through the ball and make mostly accurate throws to his target. He ran a 7.06 60 and a 4.44 home-to-first. At the plate, DuPont is a free swinger with a fast bat. He starts in a balance position with minimal, smooth load. He has a level bat path with a gap-to-gap approach. DuPont has an exit velo of 78 MPH.
Kyle Giefer (Kickapoo, 1B/OF, 2016)
Giefer is a 6-foot-0 184-pound left handed hitting 1B/OF. In the outfield, Giefer had a positional velo of 82 MPH, showing aggressive actions to the ball. He has a clean hand-to-glove exchange and made mostly accurate throws to his target. On the infield, Giefer showed quick feet and an accurate arm that put the ball on the money on his throws. He has soft hands and good range at 1B. He has a 3/4 release and a quick arm at both He has a 3/4 release and a quick arm at both 1B and OF. He had an outfield velo of 82 MPH and an infield velo of 80 MPH. Offensively, Geifer starts with relaxed hands and minimal load. Jared Gillen (Barstow, OF, 2016)
Gillen is a physical 6-foot-1 190-pound OF. Gillen has aggressive actions to the ball and throws with an over-the-top release. He posted a positional velo of 80 MPH and made somewhat accurate throws to his target. Offensively, Gillen has a smooth load and level bat path to extension. He has a gap-to-gap approach with projectable power. He had an exit velo of 85 MPH, and runs a 4.60 home-to-first.
Riley Herron (Kickapoo, OF, 2016)
Herron is a projectable 6-foot-2 175-pound left handed hitting outfielder. Herron gets good reads on the ball in the outfield. He had a positional velo of 78 MPH and made somewhat accurate throws to his target. He has a clean exchange and a 3/4 release. With the bat, Herron has a very repeatable swing. He starts in an athletic position and has a smooth load. He has a line drive approach to both gaps with signs of power to his pull gap. Herron has a quick, level bat path with an exit velo of 78 MPH. He runs a 7.19 60.
Montel Jones (Raytown, OF, 2016)
Jones is an athletic, projectable 6-foot-0 174-pound OF. Jones was one of the top athletes in the event, posting a 7.08 60 and a 4.3 home-to-first. He took aggressive routes to the ball and made mostly accurate throws to the plate. He has an over-the-top release with good carry on this throw, recording a 76 MPH positional velo. At the plate, Jones starts from a balanced position and has a smooth, simple load. He has strong hands and upper body and produces a fast bat and a level path. He has an exit velo of 83 MPH.
Mitchell McCallister (Staley, OF, 2016)
McCallister is a strong, athletic 5-foot-11, 180-pound OF. McCallister showed good speed, recording a 4.25 home-to-first and good pop from the bat with an 86 MPH exit velo. At the plate, McCallister has simple, repeatable swing mechanics. He has a line-drive approach to both gaps, with power to his pull gap. He has an athletic set-up with a smooth load that creates a level path. In the outfield, McCallister works behind the ball and has a clean hand-to-glove exchange. He has a positional velo of 77 MPH.
Cole Stamper (Eureka, OF, 2016)
Stamper is a projectable 6-foot 172-pound OF. In the outfield, Stamper has a clean hand-to-glove exchange with a long, loose arm swing. He has an over-the-top release and made mostly accurate throws with a positional velo of 76 MPH. At the plate, Stamper has easily repeatable mechanics. He starts in a balanced position with a smooth load. He has a level bat path with good extension and showed the ability to stay on the ball to both gaps. He has a 83 MPH exit velos, ran a 7.28 60 and a 4.53 home-to-first.
Craig Straws (Liberty, OF, 2016)
Straws is an athletic 5-foot-11 170-pound left handed hitting outfielder. Straws was impressive with his speed, running a 4.18 home-to-first from the left side and a 6.89 60. With the bat, Straws starts in an athletic position and uses a toe touch to load. He has a line-drive approach to the middle of the field and produces an exit velo of 89 MPH. In the outfield, Straws is aggressive getting to the ball and gets good reads off the bat. He has a fluid exchange as he plays through the ball, making somewhat accurate throws. He has a positional velo of 75 MPH.
Hunter Swift (Staley, 1B/OF, 2016)
Swift is a strong 5-foot-7 165-pound left handed hitting 1B/OF. In the outfield, Swift posted throws at 80 MPH with mostly accurate throws and good carry. He had aggressive actions and fluid to the ball, working behind the ball. On the infield, Swift showed good feet and a quick hand-to-glove exchange. He had an positional velo of 78 MPH and made somewhat accurate throws. He has soft hands and a high 3/4 release in both the outfield and infield. Offensively, Swift starts with an open stance and uses a small leg kick. He has a strong lower half and has a line drive approach, mostly in the pull in the gap. Swift has a level bat path and generates good bat speed. He runs a 4.31 home-to-first and recorded an 86 MPH exit velo.
