1.20.14 St. Louis Underclass: Catcher Analysis

On Monday, January 20 at River's Edge Sports Complex PBR Missouri held the St. Louis Underclass Invite Showcase.  Below is a look at the catchers from the event.  Recently, we have taken a look at the ourfielder and infielders.  Pitcher will later this week. 

 

Drew Harlow (Park Hills Central, 2016)
1/20/14 – Harlow is a 6-foot-2 210-pound catcher that shows that he is continuing to progress. He showed a quick, clean exchange that produces pop-times between 1.99 and 2.21.  His throws had carry and were consistently on the bag.  He recorded a positional velo of 73 MPH from the crouch and a 7.28 60.  Offensively, he starts with a balanced, athletic stance and has a simple load with a level bat path.  He has a opposite field approach that consistently resulted in line drives and an exit velo of 83 MPH .  As he continues to develop, he could be one of the top catchers in his class.

Ryan Knernschield (St. John Vianney, 2016)
1/20/14 Knernschield is a strong 5-foot-11 180-pound catcher.  He has a quick, clean exchange that produces pop times between 2.10 and 2.30.  His throws had carry and were consistently accurate. His had a positional velo of 80 MPH.  Offensively, is slightly uphill with a pull approach.  He has a simple balanced stance and power potential.   He has an exit velo of 79 MPH and a 7.55 60 time.

Adam Gunter (De Smet, 2016)
1/20/14 – Gunter is an athletic 5-foot-10 172-pound left handed hitting catcher.  A quick, fluid exchange and a positional velo of 69 MPH.  His pop times were between 2.30 and 2.45.  At the plate, Gunter starts from a athletic, balanced start and produces a level swing path.  He has a gap-to-gap approach that produces consistent line drives.  He has an exit velo of 77 MPH and runs a 7.80 60.

Nick Herrenbruck (CBC, 2017)
1/20/14 – Herrenbruck is a 5-foot-6 160-pound catcher.  His pop-times were between 2.28 and 2.50.  Herrenbruck has a fluid exchange and a positional velo of 57 MPH.  He had one of the top 60 times in the event at 7.10.  At the plate, Herrenbruck has a balanced stance and a pull approach.  He has a level swing that produced mostly line drives.  His exit velo was 69 MPH.  

James Ownbey (Webster Groves, 2016)
1/20/14 – Ownbey is a 6-foot-1 150-pound catcher.  He has a longer over-the-top arm action that produces pop-times between 2.35 and 2.65.  His has a clean exchange and his throws were mostly close to the bag.  Ownbey has a 70 MPH positional velo and runs a 8.19 60.  At the plate, Ownbey has an opposite field approach and a 57 MPH exit velo.
 
Tyler Pauley (Marquette, 2017)
1/20/14 – Pauley is an athletic 6-foot 170 pound catcher.  He has a clean exchange with fluid footwork and pop times between 2.22 and 2.60.  His positional velo was 66 MPH and he ran a 7.72 60.  At the plate, Pauley has a level swing with a pull approach.  Although he get a little long, he hit mostly line drives with carry.  His exit velo was 74 MPH.

Daniel Reed (Edwardsville (IL), 2017)
1/20/14 – Reed is 5-foot-10 175-pound catcher with projectable skill sets behind the plate.  He has a fluid, clean and quick exchange with a short release that produced accurate throws.  He pop-times were between 2.18 and 2.25.  He showed soft hands and had a positional velo of 71 MPH.  He also ran a 7.28 60.  Offensively, Reed has an uphill bat path but showed good bat speed producing an exit velo of 83 MPH.  He has good balance and a pull approach.

Trynton Tompkins (Greenville, 2016)
1/20/14 – Tompkins is a stocky 5-foot-10 195-pound catcher.  He had a fluid exchange that produces pop times between 2.05 and 2.30 and throws that were mostly close to the bag.  Tompkins has a 71 MPH positional velo and ran a 7.50 60.  At the plate, he show the ability to hit gap-to-gap line drives consistently with a level swing. He has good balance and a short stride and produced an exit velo 77 MPH.
