Evaluation: 5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. Solid athletic build. 7.13 runner at this event. Wide shoulders with present strength. Rotational hitter. Front heel turn trigger. Short to contact. Shows flashes of pop to gaps. 82 mph exit velocity off tee. Quick twitch defender who hustles and plays with energy. Feet move well. Shows soft hands. ½ pie arm action with 77 mph arm strength across. Arm action needs to improve to stay on left side of field but brings above average moto/ skills to the table.

PBR: Why did you choose Minnesota State University?
PETERSEN: I choose MSU based on the feel of the university, the baseball program, and the coach. I loved the layout of the campus and just the overall feel of it when I visited there. The program has been very successful in the past decade. I want to compete at a high level and for championships. Coach Magers is a good guy as well as a great coach. I look forward to working hard for him and for my future teammates.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?
PETERSEN: I was considering Augustana, UMD, and NDSU. I had not gotten an offer from NDSU, but I could have waited for one later in the year. I didn't want to lose the great opportunity I had at MSU so I took it.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?
PETERSEN: They had seen me in the high school state tournament my sophomore year. They watched me throughout last season as well as during the legion season in the summer. We started talking last spring off and on. The talks got more season towards the end of the summer until I made my decision in September.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?
PETERSEN: I do feel relieved. The college decision is a huge thing for kids my age. I am seeing a lot of classmates of mine struggle with picking a college. It's nice knowing that I don't have to worry about that and I can focus on my senior year of high school.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?
PETERSEN: The biggest thing was the feeling that I had when I went on my visit to MSU. I could see myself going there even if I didn't play baseball. That was huge for me.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
PETERSEN: I have had countless people help me achieve my goals. My parents have been the most important in this process. They helped me get my priorities in order and focus on what is important in life- faith and family. They taught me how to work hard and push myself to be my best.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?
PETERSEN: At first I thought it would be a quick and easy process. It wasn't very quick and it was kinda tough. It's a long process that tests patience and work ethic. You have to stay focused on what you want in a college and not let other people try to sway you one way or the other. It's an easier process when you have people supporting your decisions and efforts. And that was exactly what I had.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?
PETERSEN: MSU has a senior second baseman that will graduate in the spring. The coaching staff has brought in me and one other middle infielder to compete for that spot our freshman year.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
PETERSEN: The most memorable moment for me was when my American Legion team won the Great Plains Region Tournament in 2014. I played with all my childhood friends and it was like winning a World Series to us.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?
PETERSEN: The best player I have competed against is Eddie Estrada. He is a phenomenal baseball player. He has a one of the sweetest swings I have ever seen. Eddie hit three home runs against my high school team when we played them last year. I know he has a bright baseball future ahead of him.
