Prep Baseball Report's MN Unsigned Senior Showcase took place on Sunday, August 21, 2016. The event was held at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul in St. Paul, MN. The event featured prospects from Minnesota, Wisconsin, South & North Dakota from the 2017 class who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and multiple colleges in attendance. Thank you to the players, parents, my staff and UNW-St. Paul Head Coach Dave Hieb for such a great event.
There were a number of great individual performances this year at the MN Unsigned Senior Showcase; we have broken down the individual statistics below.
As we drill down into the statistics:
+ 11 players ran sub-7.2 60's.
+ 19 players recorded 84+ mph exit velocities
+ 9 players recorded 78+ mph infield throws
+ 12 players recorded 78+ mph outfield throws
+ 9 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+ 3 catchers recorded sub-2.1 pop times
+ 26 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

Below we have highlighted the prospects at their respective positions with evaluations; listed alphabetically.
PITCHING EVALUATIONS
Riley Ahern, RHP/3B, Holy Angels, 2017
6-foot-3, 210-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 8.45 runner. Controlled delivery, aggressive down mound, good direction with extension to plate. Long arm action with slight wrap on backside with ¾ slot out front. Command fastball well with late running action at 81-83 mph. Showed better breaking ball with depth and tight rotation for strikes. Solid running action on changeup at 75-76 mph. Open stance, aggressive swinger, inconsistent stride with collapse at contact, line drive swing plane, mid/pull approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Shows usable hands and feet, needs to work through baseball, accurate arm to bag, 81 mph arm strength.
Cole Albers, SS/RHP, Champlin Park, 2017
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.38 runner. Open stance, easy load and stride, short to contact, with extension through baseball, line drive approach and works gap to gap, 84 mph exit velocity. Light on his feet defensively, above avg. actions, fields deep in stance occasionally, loose easy actions, fields with confidence, carry and accuracy to bag with 83 mph arm strength. On mound; good body control, high front glove side creating deception, long loose arm action with extension out front. Fastball was 80-82 mph with flashes of above avg. running action and command to both sides of plate. Short break on curveball, thrown for strikes, in bottom of zone consistently. Shows feel for changeup with run and sink.
Tanner Berwald, 3B/RHP, St. Croix Lutheran, 2017
6-foot-3, 225-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.99 runner. Crouched upper half, leg kick trigger, leans over plate at contact, restricted bat path, mid/pull approach with line drive and ground ball contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Solid glove and feet, avg. range, tends to funnel underneath body, quick release on throws, accurate arm to bag with 78 mph arm strength. On mound; short turn into balance point, hitch and pause in mechanics, short draw on backside of arm action. Fastball had flat action at 77-80 mph. Slider action on breaking ball, inconsistent feel for zone, at 68-71 mph. Solid run and fade on changeup.
Travis Brown, LHP, St. Michael-Albertville, 2017
5-foot-9, 165-pound left-handed pitcher. Athletic compact frame. #46 ranked player in MN 2017 class. Shows good rhythm and tempo to delivery. Athletic actions, aggressive down the mound, good direction, and has extension and finish. Short arm action producing 79-81 mph fastballs with late above avg. running action. 11/5 breaking ball with tight spin projects to be an above avg. pitch at the college level. Solid run and fade on changeup, drops slot on release, but is thrown with fastball arm speed.
Caleb Carlson, 3B/RHP, Bemidji, 2017
6-foot-2, 180-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.39 runner. Square stance with slight load, minimal use of lower half with straight legs, shows ability to use whole field, ground ball and line drive contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Usable glove with solid range, heavier feet and avg. actions, solid carry and accuracy on throws from short ¾ arm slot. 76 mph arm strength. On mound; simple mechanics, drop and drive delivery, short arm action. Fastball was 77-78 mph with erratic command. Sweeping breaking on curveball with early shape and loose spin. Changeup was firm and flat in zone.
Conner Cress, SS/RHP, Simley, 2017
5-foot-10, 175-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.88 runner. Open stance, strides to square, creates bat speed, hands stay close to body with minimal extension through contact, flashes consistent hard contact with mid/pull approach, 76 mph exit velocity. Solid actions, clean exchange with quick release, occasional tall fielding position with flat glove position, solid carry and accuracy to bag, 78 mph arm strength. On mound; high leg kick delivery with back arch, aggressive down mound, with slight pie arm action. Flat action on fastball, elevated, at 79-81 mph. Solid shape and rotation on 12/6 breaking ball. Avg. command and action on changeup.
Derek Drees, RHP, Benilde St. Margaret’s, 2017
6-foot-5, 200-pound right-handed pitcher. Currently #27 ranked player in MN 2017 class. Tall athletic frame with present lean strength. Simple repeatable mechanics, controls body well, with good direction to plate. Slight stab and wrap on backside of arm circle. High ¾ arm slot with good arm speed and quick hand out front. Commands zone well with downhill fastball at 87-88 mph. Slider action on breaking ball at 72-74 mph, tight rotation, with command to glove side of plate. Has arm speed on changeup, drops slot slightly, with running action and control.
Alex Evenson, LHP/OF, Minnehaha Academy, 2017
6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Lean athletic build. Back turn delivery, long clean arm action, aggressive down mound, ball comes out clean from high ¾ slot. Fastball has life and above avg. run at 81-83 mph. Maintains arm speed on breaking ball with solid 12/6 curveball with late break. Cut action on changeup with above avg. sink. 7.44 runner. Flat bat setup, body load, aggressive inline swing, gap to gap approach, consistent hard line drive contact, 86 mph exit velocity. Good hands and feet, creates direction on throws, works through ball well, solid accuracy with occasional elevated throws, 83 mph arm from outfield. Previously un-ranked; Evenson will make a serious push into the MN 2017 Rankings.
Sean Flaherty, RHP/SS, Lakeville North, 2017
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Stretch only, good direction to plate with front side and stride foot, short arm action from OT slot, moderate effort with occasional head whack. Fastball was 80-81 mph, on slight downhill plane, with flat action. Cutter type breaking ball thrown at 72-75 mph. Firm changeup with occasional arm-side run. 7.19 runner. Preset hands with easy stride, collapses back elbow into uphill swing plane, short path, lacks extension through zone, gap to gap approach with solid pop in bat, 84 mph exit velocity. Above avg. arm with accuracy, plays flat footed with late glove presentation, avg. feet and hands, 83 mph arm strength.
James Green, RHP/3B, St. Francis, 2017
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Uptempo delivery, travels across rubber, drop and drive mechanics, heavy recoil on release. Flat action on fastball at 82-83 mph. Inconsistent breaking ball at 66-67 mph. Changeup was 69-71 mph with above avg. run and sink. 7.4 runner. Preset hands, body load, avg. use of lower half, occasional hard contact, works middle of field, ground ball and line drive contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork, fields deep and funnels underneath body, solid carry and accuracy from long release, 81 mph arm strength.
Nick Haivala, LHP/OF, Sturgis Brown (SD), 2017
6-foot, 145-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.94 runner. Lean build, controlled tempo to crouched balance point, good direction to plate, short clean arm action, solid extension out front. Fastball was 71-73 mph with varying run and cut action. Sideways spin on breaking ball with early shape and break. Arm-side sink on changeup; has feel in bottom of zone. Open stance, strides to square, quiet head to contact, consistent solid contact, mid/pull line drive approach, 75 mph exit velocity. Solid feet and actions, creates direction on throws, throws flat footed occasionally, low ¾ arm slot effects accuracy and carry to home plate, 72 mph arm strength from outfield. Sound defender at first, has solid range, makes routine plays, and shows ability to receive around bag. 73 mph arm strength across diamond.
Samuel Hanson, RHP, Rochester Lourdes, 2017
6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. Tall lean build with longer legs. Short rocker step with quick turn into balance point. Short stride down mound and lands open with front foot. Up and over delivery with solid hand speed out front. Fastball was 78-80 mph with flat elevated action in zone. Lacks velo currently on 53-56 mph breaking ball with loose spin. Changeup was 58-62 mph.
Nick Herold, RHP, Coon Rapids, 2017
6-foot-3, 200-pound right-handed pitcher. Previously unknown to the PBR staff. Taller build, lean upper half, present size and strength in legs, baby faced, very projectable arm. Slight tuck and turn with body control. Long loose arm action with above avg. extension to plate. Herold oozes potential as he continues to mature and develop. Shows late run and sink on fastball at 82-84 mph. Has feel for 12/6 curveball, solid velocity and spin, at 73-74 mph. Late run and sink on changeup, thrown with good arm action, at 73-75 mph. Herold will enter the MN 2017 Rankings and is a pitcher that should garner serious consideration from many colleges.
Ryan Hillman, RHP, Coon Rapids, 2017
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed pitcher. Uptempo delivery with good rhythm and body control. Long clean arm action with extension and finish. Uses lower half well in delivery with direction to plate. Late cutter type action on fastball at 71-72 mph. 12/6 breaking ball has solid shape, tight rotation, and depth. Avg. changeup currently with elevated flat action at the plate.
Mitchell Hoover, RHP, Brandon Valley (SD), 2017
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed pitcher. Controlled rhythm and tempo to delivery. Varies timing in hands break occasionally. Long extended arm stroke with slight pie arm action. Showed solid command of fastball, to both sides of plate with flat action, at 78-80 mph. 10/4 breaking ball shows signs of being an above avg. pitch later on. Changeup has flat running action at 68-70 mph.
Kasey Kuck, RHP, New Ulm Cathedral, 2017
5-foot-10, 157-pound right-handed pitcher. Short turn into balance point, simple delivery, lands slightly across body, upright release with avg. extension and finish to plate. Limited use of front side but has clean arm action from high ¾ slot. Fastball was 77-79 mph with occasional running action. Rolling 10/4 curveball with early shape and break. Above avg. action on changeup with good running action.
Cole LaLonde, RHP, Minnetonka, 2017
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. Taller lean build with present strength in lower half. Travels across rubber and strides across body. Back arch as he works down mound, front shoulder tilt, and works up and over front side. Drives fastball downhill, at 81-82 mph, for strikes to both sides of plate with flat action. Short slider type break on curveball at 69-71 mph. Inconsistent command of changeup with cutting action left short of plate.
Griffin Lanoue, RHP, Rosemount, 2017
6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. Currently #23 ranked player in MN 2017 class. Lean athletic build on mound with projection. Controlled delivery with athletic body control and direction to plate. Explosive and aggressive down mound with extension and finish. Fastball was 84-86 mph, on steep downhill plane, for consistent strikes to both sides of plate. Threw 12/6 curveball, late tight spin and depth, at 70-72 mph. Firmer changeup at 78-81 mph had flat action. One of better uncommitted arms in MN and Midwest in general.
James Lee, RHP, Henry Sibley, 2017
6-foot, 200-pound right-handed pitcher. Controlled delivery, open front leg at balance point, lands open to plate, minimal extension and finish, tends to throw with arm only. Fastball was 73-74 mph, touching 77 mph, with flat action. Inconsistent shape and spin on breaking ball at 66-68 mph. Best pitch was low 70’s changeup with late run and sink at plate.
Austin Lenhardt, 3B/RHP, Winona, 2017
6-foot, 200-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 8.02 runner. Good rhythm in box, body load, clean swing path, flashes hard contact to pull side of field, works gap to gap well, 77 mph exit velocity. Usable glove, avg. quickness and range, stiff one piece arm action, 72 mph arm strength. On mound; controlled delivery with good direction to plate. Short arm action, lands occasionally on stiff front leg, with some finish on release. Fastball showed flat action at 76-77 mph. Above avg. breaking ball, currently his best pitch, with tight 12/6 shape and late break. Works bottom of zone with changeup with cut and sink.
Dallas McBroom, RHP, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, 2017
6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. Projectable athletic build on mound. Body is loose, athletic, and flexible. Lands across body in delivery. Solid use of lower half with drop and drive mechanics. Some raw mechanics but projects extremely well with college level instruction. Fastball was downhill with solid life at 82-84 mph. Slider action on curveball with solid spin and shape at 68-69 mph. Running action on firm changeup at 78-80 mph. Follow arm in 2017 class; and will enter the 2017 ranking for MN.
Johnny Miller, LHP/OF, Minnetonka, 2017
6-foot-2, 170-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.76 runner. Works primarily out of stretch, heavy stab down on backside of arm action, up and over with OT slot, lands across body in delivery. Fastball had flat action at 70-74 mph. Solid breaking ball with 12/6 shape for strikes. Needs more consistency with changeup. Medium base, leg kick trigger, spins on back leg causing hands to roll-over early at contact, mid/pull approach producing line drives and ground balls, 79 mph exit velocity. Solid actions with long levers in outfield, avg. momentum on throws, OT arm slot, elevated throws to plate, 76 mph arm strength from outfield.
Lucas Mohn, OF/RHP, Hatton (ND), 2017
5-foot-9, 180-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.5 runner. Square stance, low hand slot, minimal use of lower half in swing, rotational hitter, mid/pull approach, 80 mph exit velocity. Adequate range, plays with heavier feet, field cleanly and out front, short arm action with avg. carry and accuracy to target, 78 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; simple step and throw mechanics, short clean arm action, upright on release with minimal finish. Fastball was elevated in zone at 74-76 mph. Flat spinning action on curveball. Flat action on changeup.
Kelly Obryan, 2B/RHP, Colome (SD), 2017
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.13 runner. Active load and stride, loose hands and creates bat speed, balls jumps off bat well, pull pop with line drive and fly ball contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Raw athletic actions, good glove and reactions, solid accuracy to bag, 74 mph arm strength. On mound; tuck and turn delivery, loose athletic actions, with short clean arm action. Fastball works on downhill plane at 78-80 mph. Hangs 10/4 breaking ball in top of zone; shows solid rotation and shape; and should improve with better release point. Wobbly action on changeup on flat plane.
Brock Reller, OF/LHP, Grand Forks Central (ND), 2017
6-foot-1, 210-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Strong compact build with loose actions. 7.2 runner. Balanced stance, front heel turn trigger, clean line drive bat path, elevates baseball with pop in bat, mid/pull approach, 93 mph exit velocity. Simple actions in outfield, shows ability to field, works through ball, minimal effort on throws, above avg. carry with accuracy to target, 90 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; controlled delivery, lands open to target, tall and fall mechanics, easy effort. Fastball has ASR at 83-85 mph; touching 87 mph. Curveball has hard late break at 70-72 mph. Changeup was thrown at 68-69 mph.
John Retterath, RHP, Minnetonka, 2017
6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher. Short turn into balance point, slight tuck and turn, leak early from rubber with collapse in stride, occasional extension and finish to plate, short arm action from OT slot. Fastball has slight downhill plane, throws strikes, at 77-78 mph. Throws 11/5 breaking ball at 67-70 mph. Late arm-side run on changeup at 71-73 mph.
Ryan Rodriguez, LHP, Chaska, 2017
6-foot-2, 180-pound left-handed pitcher. Tall lean frame. Travels across rubber into back arch balance point. Lacks rhythm in hand break through motion. Front foot lands out to third base causing him to open early and sling ball towards plate. One piece arm action with upright release. Fastball showed slight running action at 79-81 mph. Able to produce tight spin on 12/6 breaking ball with solid depth. Currently is inconsistent around zone with changeup.
Jediah Schmidt, LHP, Mitchell (SD), 2017
6-foot, 170-pound left-handed pitcher. One of the surprise performers at event. Schmidt shows a controlled delivery, good rhythm and balance, clean arm action, and ball jumps out of hand with good arm speed. Fastball was 79-81 mph, above avg. command, with exceptional late running action. Shows solid shape on slurvy 67-68 mph breaking ball for strikes. Late arm-side run and sink on changeup thrown at fastball arm speed. Not exceptional velocity at present; but mechanics, arm action, and feel for 3 pitches projects Schmidt out as a commodity left-hander for many college programs.
Austin Schneider, RHP/OF, Delano, 2017
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Uptempo delivery, compact high leg kick, long wrapping arm action on backside, slight pie ¾ slot out front. Fastball was 79-81 mph with late running action. Inconsistent breaking ball at 70-71 mph. Changeup has sinking action, thrown with good arm speed, at 73-76 mph. 7.4 runner. Wider closed stance, stiff swing plane through contact, limited weight shift, works middle of field, ground ball and line drive contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Solid actions in outfield, plays through ball, limited use of front side on throws, long arm action from ¾ slot, avg. accuracy and carry, 82 mph arm strength.
Jordan Schramel, RHP/OF, Delano, 2017
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #38 ranked player in MN 2017 class. Good rhythm and sequence in delivery, slight front shoulder tilt, quick hand out front on release. Had command of fastball to both sides of plate with running action at 84-85 mph. Slurvy breaking ball with solid shape and spin at 73-74 mph. Firm changeup, tends to over-throw at times, at 77-78 mph. 7.28 runner. Body load with double tap trigger. Slight collapse to contact, flat line drive swing plane, shows ability to use whole field, consistent solid contact with flashes of pop in bat, 81 mph exit velocity. Shows good actions in field with above avg. footwork and glove, could use greater momentum playing through throws, has above avg. carry and accuracy to target, 85 mph arm strength from outfield.
Matt Shaw, SS/RHP, Hopkins, 2017
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.44 runner. Tall open stance, strides to square, avg. use of lower half, stays inside baseball, consistent line drive contact, gap to gap approach, 80 mph exit velocity. Solid actions and athleticism in field, above avg. glove, works out front- up and through baseball, some extra glove pats and movement, shows appropriate footwork, clean arm action with accuracy and carry to bag, 81 mph arm strength. On mound; short turn into balance point, stabbing action on backside, hitch in delivery to plate. Flat action on fastball at 76-77 mph. Solid 11/5 shape on breaking ball. Slight running action on changeup.
Jack Stoddard, OF/RHP, Waconia, 2017
5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.01 runner. Tall stance, preset hands, leg kick trigger, stiffer path through zone, short finish after contact, solid pull contact from flat swing plane, 78 mph exit velocity. Plays through ball well, soft hands, good direction with feet, short arm action, fast hand speed on release, solid carry and accuracy to target, 84 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; controlled delivery, power T arm action, solid extension and finish to plate. Showed good command of fastball in bottom of zone at 82-84 mph. Sweeping early break with 10/4 shape on breaking ball. Flat action on changeup with feel for bottom of zone.
Nick Sturnieks, RHP/OF, Robbinsdale Armstrong, 2017
6-foot-5, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #147 ranked player in MN 2017 class. Tall lanky build. Some stiffness to delivery, lands closed to target, with 2-piece arm action from OT slot. Fastball was downhill, straight action, at 76-79 mph. Loose spin and avg. feel for breaking ball. Changeup was flat and elevated in zone. 7.47 runner. Low hand setup, leg kick trigger, stiff swing plane, straight legs with limited weight shift, gap to gap approach with avg. pop in bat, 77 mph exit velocity. Average feet, routes and angles in field, soft glove, fields out front, elevated throws to target with solid carry and accuracy, 83 mph arm strength from outfield.
Darius Uditsky, 1B/RHP, Holy Family, 2017
6-foot-3, 230-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 8.18 runner. Tall stance, knee to knee trigger, stays connected and is short to contact, solid extension through baseball, hard mid/pull contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Sure hands, solid arm across, avg. quickness and range for position, solid receiver around bag, 75 mph arm strength. On mound; slight crouch and turn at balance point, short arm action, delivered from OT slot with occasional head jerk and effort. Fastball was elevated in zone at 77-79 mph. Late cut action on breaking ball at 66-69 mph. Solid run and fade on changeup at 70-72 mph.
Jackson Uner, 3B/RHP, Hill Murray, 2017
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.4 runner. Open stance, long stride, arm bar in load, consistent solid contact, uphill bat path through zone, 82 mph exit velocity. One of top infielders at event; shows above avg. actions, range, and sure hands. Clean arm action with accuracy and carry to bag, 82 mph arm strength. On mound; high leg kick delivery on mound, short arm action, with some effort on release. Solid command to both sides of plate with fastball at 79-82 mph. Shortens and slows arm action on breaking ball with 12/6 shape. Elevated changeup in zone for strikes.
Quin Viktora, 1B/LHP, Champlin Park, 2017
5-foot-11, 175-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.84 runner. One of better bats at event. Slightly open stance with controlled leg kick trigger, clean bath path, quiet head through contact, mid/pull approach with rhythm in swing, above avg. contact with hard line drives, 85 mph exit velocity. Sure hands, clean exchanges with quick release, accurate to bag, moves well around bag, 71 mph arm strength. On mound; simple controlled delivery, high glove side with shoulder tilt, and has direction to plate. Fastball was 72-74 mph with minimal life. Short break on curveball at 65-67 mph. Shows changeup in zone; with ability to take away from hitter.
Luke Wallner, RHP, Forest Lake, 2017
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed pitcher. #71 ranked player in MN 2017 class. Strong compact build. Travels across rubber, shows tempo and rhythm in delivery, lands across body, with extended clean arm action. Loose ¾ arm slot; tends to release with upright finish. Fastball was 81-83 mph with run and sink; sneaky velo- jumps on hitter. Short break for strikes on curveball at 72-73 mph. Tends to slow arm down on changeup, with cut action, at 68-70 mph.
Christopher Webber, C/RHP, Southland, 2017
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.78 runner. Square stance, body load, simple line drive swing plane, some stiffness in lower half, ground ball contact, mid/pull approach, 82 mph exit velocity. Rocker step into throw, long exchange, stands up losing lower half momentum, lower release slot on throws, 75 mph arm strength with 2.15-2.25 pop times. Tall setup, high glove presentation, stabs at ball receiving. On mound; controlled delivery, front foot stays underneath body, good direction to plate, with extension out front. Fastball was 82-85 mph with late cut action. Consistent 11/5 breaking ball kept in bottom of zone; at 77-78 mph. Avg. changeup at 68-72 mph, thrown for strikes, but elevated in zone.
Dillon Whittaker, RHP/3B, Waconia, 2017
6-foot-3, 215-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Large strong build. Controlled delivery, slightly uncontrolled front leg, good direction to plate, arm path is across body. Short arm circle on backside, avg. extension out front, and throws from ¾ arm slot. Fastball shows run and sink at 83-85 mph. Tends to leave breaking ball elevated and arm-side, with 11/5 shape, at 67-69 mph. Early cutting action on changeup at 72-74 mph. 7.45 runner. Tall stance, preset hands and load, inline stride to pitcher, lacks rhythm in swing, mid/pull approach, line drive and ground ball contact, 82 mph exit velocity. Average hands and feet on left-side of field, clean arm action, long release on throws, accurate to bag, 75 mph arm strength.
Jack Zigan, RHP, Eden Prairie, 2017
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. Young projectable build that should add size and strength. Shows rhythm and tempo in delivery, early collapse of back leg causing arm to drag occasionally, but hand is extremely quick out front working on a downhill plane. Fastball was 82-83 mph for strikes, on steeper downhill plane, to both sides of plate. Short break on curveball at 68-70 mph. Works bottom of zone with changeup, slight running action, at 69-70 mph.
