Pre-Season Preview: Grosse Pointe South

By Mike Penn
Michigan Scouting Director

Dan Griesbaum has had plenty of talent come through the doors of Grosse Pointe South over his 30+ years in coaching.  Griesbaum has had over 60 players move on to the collegiate ranks and has produced talented players like current Kansas City Royal Chris Getz. This season year will be no different.

Grosse Point South is coming off of a season with a 25-11 record and second place finish in the MAC-Red division.  They should compete for another conference title in 2013.

Grosse Pointe South will once again be led by first baseman Carmen Benedetti and right-hand pitcher, third baseman Jack Doyle.  As juniors, both players received All-State recognition with First-Team and Honorable Mention honors respectively.  Benedetti is physical left hand hitting first baseman that is committed to the University of Michigan and Doyle is currently undecided as to where he will play next year.

Other returning impact players are senior George Fishback (C), senior Eddie Champagne (RHP), and junior Richie Kish (SS).  Fishback, a Kalamazoo College commit, was also honored last season as an All-District performer.

Some prospects to keep on eye on in the 2014 recruiting class currently are Kish, Ron Williams (C/OF), Colden Gosselin (MIF), and Jimmy Mench (2B/OF). Additionally, according to Griesbaum, the current top 2015 prospect in the program is Ryan Liarge (3B/1B).  Those are names we will be sure to follow.

With talented players returning and more in the pipeline, Grosse Pointe South is certainly poised to give defending conference champion Sterling Heights Stevenson another run for their money in 2013.
