A three-run first inning proved to be all the runs Archbishop spalding would need as the Cavaliers beat rival Calvert Hall 5-2 in the early season clash for MIAA supremacy.
Lavale Hodges got the scoring started in the first for Spalding (7-0). After a one out walk to SS David Harding, Hodges launched a ball to deep left-center that bounced off the fence. Harding scored from first base and Hodges moved into second for a stand-up double. Three hits in a row after by Barrett Smith, Nick Vermillion, and Carter Sears led to two more runs and a 3-0 lead after one inning. Spalding would add two runs in the fourth off of two Calvert Hall errors and RBI’s by Evan Fochtman and Billy Godrick giving Spalding 5-0 lead after four. Calvert Hall would get on the board in the top of the fifth after a two-run homerun by sophomore outfielder JP Murphy. Calvert Hall would get two on in the final inning, but could not muster any runs and Spalding would finish out the victory.
Tyler Blohm was impressive in his start for Spalding (more on Blohm later in our Scout blog). The lefty went six innings and scattered four hits giving up two earned run while striking out 10. He was aggressive on the mound and showed strong command of his secondary pitches during the game, keeping the Calvert Hall lineup off balance. Vermillion led Spalding with two hits, while Hodges, Smith, Fochtman, and Godrick would add a hit and RBI each.
Calvert Hall was led by Murphy with two hits and two RBI in the game. Dariel Torres added two hits for the Cardinals. Brad Weber took the loss, going five innings giving up seven hits and three earned runs. He struck out three on the day.
