The Montgomery County Trials was held at Kelley Park in Gaithersburg, MD. Today we breakdown the infielders from the event. Stay tuned for further information on players as we give detailed evaluations from each player during the event. We will name Top Performers as well as include a Future Watch (2019, 2020) if applicable.
Top Performer
Jose Leal SS Jose Maria Espana (Venezuela) 2016
Athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 156-pounds. Hits from a balanced, square set up from the right side. Has a short slightly uphill swing path. Gets barrel on the ball well and used middle of the field. Smoother load with leg kick to hitting position. Clean actions in the field. Moves well and shows nice lateral quickness. Clean exchange and throws across the diamond have carry at 84 mph. 7.09 60-yard dash.
Future watch
Lane Armour 2B Sherwood 2019
Compact frame at 5-foot-6. Hits from a slightly open set up at the plate. Short load with higher leg kick to hitting position. Has a level swing path and will elevate the baseball. Could get more lower half. Smooth rhythm in swing and shows some balance. Nice foundation at the plate. Clean actions from the shortstop position. quick exchange and gets rid of the ball well. Throws from a three-quarter arm slot, accurate at 72 mph. 7.22 60-yard dash.
Chandler Brown SS Richard Montgomery 2019
Lanky frame at 5-foot-11, 135-pounds. Hits from a wide set up. Level swing path to the ball through contact. Consistently got barrel on ball. Active feet from the infield with sound actions and a clean exchange. Throws from a ¾ arm angle with average carry on throws across the diamond. Solid foundation and will be interesting one to monitor as grows and gets stronger.
Matthew Fana C Magruder 2017
Athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 180-pounds. Hits from a slightly open setup. Leg kick to hitting position. Slightly off balance at times to hitting position. Short swing to the ball with easy effort. Solid hands behind palte as a receiver. Clean low exchange. Short arm action with accurate throws from behind. Solid footwork. Pop times consistently in the 2.2 range.
Spencer Hacker 2B Bethesda-Chevy Chase
Athletic frame at 6-foot, 160-pounds. Hits from a narrow, open set up. Quick load to hitting position. Short path to the baseball. Shows average bat speed with 77 mph exit velocity. Active feet in the infield. Clean hands and exchange throwing from a high ¾ arm slot. Throws are accurate at 83 mph across the diamond. Solid player in the 2017 class.
Chris Hauser 2B Good Counsel 2019
Compact frame at 5-foot-7, 115-pounds. Solid fundamentals and should get stronger as he fills out his frame. Hits from an open set up. Level swing path, average bat speed. Solid foundation at the plate. Gets some lower half involvement. Active feet in the infield. Exit velocity of 64 mph. Sound actions with quick exchange throwing from a low ¾ arm slot. Infield velocity of 62 mph.
Zack Vargas SS Gaithersburg 2018
Hits from an open setup. Short load with leg kick. Quick hands with a swing that gets in and out of the zone. Shows average bat speed. Gets some lower half involvement into swing. Has sound actions from the infield. Clean exchange and throws from a low three-quarter arm slot. Throws have some carry across the infield. Could stay on balls of feet a bit more.
