Delaware Preseason ID: Pitcher Analysis

The Delaware Preseason ID took place on Saturday, February 27. Over 30 players from across Maryland and Delaware were in attendance showcasing their talent in front of the PBR Maryland staff.

Over the course of the next week we will be releasing the positional analysis articles with detailed scouting reports on each player in attendance. We shall also identify top performers in each positional category along with a younger talent (2018 and younger) as a Future Watch if applicable.

Today we take a look at the pitchers that participated in the event. A talented pool with many players deserving of Top Performer recognition.

TOP PERFORMERS

Jeremy Carrow RHP Smyrna (DE) 2018
Athletic, projectable frame at 5-foot-11, 155-pounds. Smooth tempo in controlled delivery. Throws from a high ¾ arm angle. Loose arm action with quick arm speed. Pitches with easy effort. Nice lower half involvement and finishes square to the plate. Slight finish to first base side at times. Fastball works downhill with run and sink on the pitch up to 85 mph.  Breaking ball has 11/5 movement with sharp break and tight rotation at 69 mph. Keeps fastball arm speed on the pitch.  Changeup has run to the pitch and fade at 75 mph while keeping fastball arm speed. Very interesting prospect in the 2018 class and one to follow. 

James (Alex) Barker LHP Eastern Christian Academy 2017
Athletic projectable frame at 6-foot-4, 220-pounds. Has short arm action with quick arm speed pitching from a high ¾ arm angle. Controlled delivery and pitches with regular effort. Falls off to third base side at landing. Gets some lower half usage and could get some more drive from backside during release. Fastball has slight run to the pitch at 81 mph. Cutter with late break and short action up to 74 mph. Slows down a bit on the curveball which is similar to the cutter with more 1/7 action at 72 mph. Interesting prospect from the left side with projection and some raw ability. 

John Barkley RHP Smyrna (DE) 2016
Solid frame at 6-foot-2, 220-pounds. Controlled delivery to balance. Loose arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Creates quick arm speed. Pitches with regular effort.  Gets some lower half involvement. Finishes square to the plate with occasional fall to the first base side. Fastball has slight cut at times at 81 mph. Breaking ball has short 10/4 action on the pitch with later break at 73 mph and near fastball arm speed. Has some projection with a quick arm and could generate more with lower half. 

FUTURE WATCH

Andrew Carney OF Dover (DE) 2019
Solid frame at 5-foot-9, 172-pounds. Slower tempo in delivery. Throws from a high ¾ arm slot. Long, sound arm action. Gets some lower half usage and could get more backside finish. Pitches with easy effort. Fastball has some run and sink to the pitch at 75 mph. Breaking ball has short break with 1/7 action on the pitch. Changeup has slight fade on the pitch at 72 mph. Slows down slightly on off speed. Interesting 2019 to monitor how he develops as he matures. 

Carson Fowler OF/LHP Mount Pleasant 2018
Lanky frame with room to grow at 5-foot-9, 145-pounds.  Controlled delivery on the mound. Long arm action with slight pause after break. Creates some arm speed throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Pitches with regular effort. Finishes square to the plate. Some lower half usage and could get more. Fastball has slight run to the pitch up to 78 mph.  Breaking ball has 1/7 shape with early break at 64 mph and near fastball arm speed. Changeup have fade to the pitch with near fastball arm speed at 65 mph. Interesting prospect in the 2018 class and one to keep an eye on.

Zion Bannister SS/RHP West Nottingham Academy 2019
Projectable athletic frame at 6-foot, 145-pounds. Has controlled delivery on the mound. Throws from a high ¾ arm slot. Loose arm action with average arm speed. Fastball has some sink to the pitch at 70 mph. Breaking ball has gradual break on the pitch with 11/5 shape at 57 mph. Changeup has fade at 66 mph.

Justin Brooks RHP/2B St. Elizabeth 2018
Solid frame at 5-foot-9, 165-pounds. Controlled, slower tempo delivery. Has a free arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Has average arm speed. Pitches with regular effort and lands square to the plate. Fastball has slight run to the pitch at 76 mph. Breaking ball has short 11/5, almost 10/4 action on the pitch with gradual break at 63 mph and slows arm speed down slightly on the pitch. Slows slightly on the changeup with fade to the pitch at 69 mph.

Michael Carrington 1B/RHP Dover (DE) 2019
Projectable frame at 6-foot, 205-pounds. Controlled delivery. Has a short arm action with some arm speed throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Has some lower usage and could get more. Pitches with regular effort. Lands square to the plate with occasional finish to first base side. Fastball has slight sink to the pitch up to 77 mph. Breaking ball has 11/5 movement and gradual break at 65 mph with near fastball arm speed. Changeup has fade to the pitch with near fastball arm speed at 67 mph. 

Tyler Disbrow LHP DAPSS (DE) 2017
Athletic frame at 6-foot, 175-pounds. Shorter arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Shows some arm speed. Gets some lower half usage and could get a bit more from backside through finish. Falls off slightly to glove side at end. Fastball has slight run to the pitch at 77 mph. Breaking ball has short action with 1/7 shape at 67 mph and near fastball arm speed. Changeup has run to the pitch and slows down slightly on the pitch at 70 mph. Interesting lefty in the 2017 class. 

Robert Luke Childress 1B/RHP Severna Park 2017
Big strong frame at 6-foot-4, 235-pounds. Controlled delivery. Longer arm action throwing from an almost over the top angle. Creates some arm speed and gets lower half involved. Lnads slightly closed. Could get more lower half explosion. Fastball has slight run to the pitch at 79 mph. Breaking ball has gradual break with 11/5 shape and near fastball arm speed at 69 mph. Split has slight fade to the pitch at 72 mph. 

Zach Greber LHP Northwest 2017
Solid frame at 6-foot-1, 205-pounds. Controlled delivery with nice tempo. Sound arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Creates quick arm speed. Gets lower half involved and finishes square to the plate. Pitches with regular effort. Fastball has some run to the pitch up to 78 mph. Breaking ball has 2/8 action on the pitch with tight rotation and late break at 71 mph with fastball arm speed. Changeup has hard fade to the pitch at 73 mph with fastball arm speed. 

Jared Hickox RHP Dover (DE) 2017
Projectable frame at 6-foot-1, 165-pounds. Builds up tempo thru delivery. Gets lower half to work and gets good posture out. Loose arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Creates quick arm speed with extension at finish. Pitches with some effort and finishes square to the plate. Fastball has slight run on the pitch up to 82 mph. Breaking ball has short break with 11/5 shape. Later breaking pitch with near fastball arm speed. Changeup has run and sink on the pitch with fastball arm speed at 75 mph. Projectable frame that is one to keep an eye on as he begins to fill out.
