Guy DeSanctis threw a complete game three-hit shutout to lead Heights over Avalon in an early season clash of conference rivals in the OLBC.
The game was a pitcher’s duel throughout, showcasing starters DeSanctis and Avalon LHP Paul Jackson. Heading into the bottom of the sixth, both teams had only managed three hits to that point with no runners making it to third base. With two outs in the sixth inning, leadoff hitter Jack Kuzma hit a ball that dropped down the left field line for a stand up double. Next hitter Nate Gadiano then hit a slow roller that Avalon short stop KJ Curry charged then threw on-the-run to first base that first basemen was unable to pick. Kuzma had been running non-stop the entire time and cruised to the plate to score the games lone run.
Avalon threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning after a leadoff hit by Avalon second baseman Will Stachura. After a strike out in the next at-bat, DeSanctis was able to induce a double play that resulted in the end of the game.
DeSanctis was very effective throughout keeping the Avalon hitters off-balance and inducing weak contact. He was able to thwart every Avalon rally before it could get started. The long and lanky left-hander struck out four with one walk in the win. Kuzma and Ruslan Roustamov had the Heights lone hits.
Jackson himself pitched very well for Avalon in the losing effort, showing pinpoint accuracy and using all of his pitches to setup an aggressive fastball inside to hitters. Jackson went all six innings giving up two hits with five strikeouts and a unearned run. Curry, Stachura, and Erik Janss had Avalon’s three hits.
