ELITE MASSACHUSETTS PLAYERS/WHERE THEY ARE NOW?

By Dennis Healy
PBR MA Director of Scouting

Players come and go these days, new names pop on everyone's radar but here we have a look-back at some really good baseball players from the state of Massachusetts. There are a number of guys playing professionally and a number still in the college ranks. Below is a list of players we all enjoyed seeing play in Massachusetts.

Tyler Beede is a Lawrence Academy graduate, who attended Vanderbilt University. He was a first round pick last season by the San Francisco Giants. Beede is a 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-handed pitcher who hails from Auburn, Massachusetts. The righty helped lead the Commodores to the National Championship last season.

Pat Connaughton is a St. John’s Prep graduate, who took his talents to Notre Dame University. He may very well have been the best two-sport athlete in the country last season. He was a three-year starter on Notre Dame’s basketball team and the Irish’s best pitcher on the baseball team. Pat was a fourth round pick by the Baltimore Orioles last June. Connaughton played his first full pro season and will return to Notre Dame and play hoops this winter.

Nick Ahmed is an East Longmeadow High School graduate who attended the University of Connecticut. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 2nd round of the 2011 MLB draft and in 2012 was traded to the Diamondbacks in a blockbuster deal. Ahmed made his major league debut this past year in June.

Matt Antonelli hails from Peabody, Massachusetts, where he attended St. John’s Prep. He then took his talents to Winston Salem, North Carolina and The Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Antonelli was drafted out of Wake Forest in the first round by the San Diego Padres and in 2008 he made his Major League debut. His first big league hit came off of Greg Maddux. Matt retired in 2013 and continues to be involved in baseball as a coach. Ironically in high school, he was the Massachusetts player of the year in two sports, hockey and football.

Chris Capuano graduated from Cathedral Catholic HIgh School in West Springfield and then attended Duke University. He earned his degree in Economics from Duke and was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 8th round of the 1999 MLB draft. Capuano made his major league debut in 2003. He has pitched for the Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, Colorado Rockies and is currently pitching for the New York Yankees
