Playoff action around the state continued on Tuesday, and Prep Baseball Report Louisiana was on-hand to catch No. 12 Destrehan take on No. 21 Denham Springs.
LSU recruit, Landon Marceaux, got the ball for Destrehan and was electric through 9 innings. The 6-foot, 180-pound right-hander had his best stuff on the day, giving up 0 runs, and scattering 4 hits. The young 2018 grad sat 87-90 mph for 9 innings with his fastball, running it up to 92 mph on a couple of occasions. He commanded the fastball extremely well to both side of the plate with life in the strike one. He showed two different types of breaking balls, one with 11/5 shape at 73-74 mph, and one with 10/4 shape at 76-78 mph, both breaking balls had tight spin, depth and deception. In addition, Marceaux also showed a plus changeup at times with fastball arm speed, deception, and sinking action at 78-79 mph.
ULL recruit, Brock Batty, got the ball for Denham Springs and matched Marceaux pitch for pitch. The 6-foot-1 left-hander sat 82-84 mph with his fastball that had plenty of life, and he did an outstanding job of moving it around to all parts of the strike zone. Batty also showed two different types of breaking balls, one with 1/7 shape and one with 2/8 shape. Both pitches spun well, showed solid depth, and he threw them for strikes when needed.
Batty would eventually get the tough loss, as Destrehan defeated Denham Springs 1 to 0. In the final frame, Destrehan loaded the bases after two bang-bang plays at first base. Destrehan’s Jared Montz then laced a walk off single to right-field to give Destrehan the walk-off win.
The best scoring opportunity by either team before the 9th inning came in the bottom of 5th, as Destrehan’s Miles Patureau smacked a towering double off the left-field wall with a runner on 1st base. The runner was eventually gunned down at the plate, as Denham Springs executed the relay with two perfect throws.
+ After an impressive round of infield/outfield, where he showed quality arm strength for centerfield, 2019 Cade Doughty, really impressed at the plate, even though he had nothing to show for it. The lead-off hitter for the Yellow Jackets, took an 89 mph fastball from Marceaux on the first pitch of game, and turned around a rocket to the shortstop. In his 2nd and 3rd at-bats, he once again turned around a quality fastball, barreling it at the 2nd baseman and the right-fielder.
+ 2017 OF Dane Simon, also showed quality arm strength from centerfield in pre-game and then proceeded to post a 4.00 home to 1st time on a drag bunt, but was called out on another bang-bang play at 1st base.
