Louisiana's Pre-Season Second Team All-State

A few days ago Prep Baseball Report Louisiana released its 2015 pre-season first team All-State. The following is the release of the pre-season second team All-State.

Catcher

Bryant Bowen, Captain Shreve HS, 2015
A Southern Miss signee with a 6-foot, 200 pound frame from Shreveport, LA. Strong compact build, with clear present strength. Right-handed hitter with a rotational swing, hits off the backside, keeps hands inside the ball with raw bat speed, and big power. Good athlete with solid fundamentals as a catcher with a quality throwing arm, but a funky release can affect accuracy at times. Should be a serviceable defensive catcher, with a chance to be an impact offensive player hitting in middle of order.

Infield

Josh Smith, Catholic HS Baton Rouge, 2016
A middle infielder and Louisiana State commit with a 5-foot-9, 170-pound frame from Baton Rouge. Smith has been a staple for the Catholic High program since his freshmen season when he helped lead the bears to a class 5A state championship. A solid defender with soft hands, actions and advanced feel for the position. A left-handed hitter with a smooth, compact stroke with bat speed, quality bat path that finds the barrel consistently.

Braden Comeaux, Barbe HS, 2015
A Texas Christian signee with a 6-foot, 160-pound frame from Lake Charles, LA. Lean, athletic build with room to get stronger. Right-handed hitter with quick hands, short compact stroke with the bat path staying flat throughout the zone and some present bat speed. A quality runner (6.80) with good instincts as a defender, takes good angles, with good footwork, understands hops, and has a quick first step. Fast-twitch athlete that will need to get stronger, but already is a very polished player.

Christopher Reid, St. Michael’s HS, 2015
Reid is a 2015 INF with a 5-foot-10 175 pound frame from Baton Rouge, LA. An advanced left-handed hitter with loads of bat speed, loose whippy power, consistent line drive contact with power to both gaps. Has a ton of moving parts, but displays exceptional timing and handles velocity extremely well. Likely projects to second base, he has soft hands, arm strength, understands angles and hops, but lacks in range. Would be hard to imagine him not being a productive offensive player as he advances.

Zach Watson, West Ouachita, 2016
A 6-foot, 170-pound middle infielder and Louisiana State commit. Slender, athletic frame with fast twitch actions and some present strength that projects to get better. Displays quality arm strength across the infield with soft hands and quality feet. Right-handed hitter with simple, under control stroke with flat path that finds the barrel consistently. Show advanced ability to hit with good balance and timing.

Outfield

Tyler Smith, Covington HS, 2016
A 5-foot-11, 165-pound Louisiana State commit. Athletic, slender build with fast twitch type movements. Quality runner that ran a 6.88 60 yard dash. Good overall defender with tracking speed, instincts, and arm strength. Left-handed hitter that looked rusty during batting practice, but showed a good bat path with bat speed and strength at contact running into a couple towards the end of his round.

Shane Selmen, Barbe HS, 2015
A 5-foot-11, 185-pound compact athletic frame with a strong lower half and clear fast-twitch movements. Plus runner (6.5 60yd) with tracking instincts, aggressive nature, and arm strength as an outfielder. Right-handed hitter, swing gets long at times but has plus bat speed, pull power and creates good leverage. Rare player that throws left and hits right. Plays extremely hard, quality baseball IQ, and has won a ton including state championships and a national championship with Barbe HS in Lake Charles, LA.

Jacob Stracner, Sam Houston HS, 2015
A 5-foot-11, 180-pound outfielder from the Lake Charles area. Physical, strong bodied athlete with fast-twitch actions and present strength. Plays extremely hard with a chip on his shoulder and is an extremely tough competitor. Above average runner with plus arm strength, smooth actions in the outfield and tracks balls nicely. Right-handed hitter with raw bat speed, good bat path, creates quality leverage in the swing and has present raw power.

Pitchers

Carlo Graffeo, St. Pauls HS, 2015
A 2015 RHP with a 6-foot 175 pound frame from St. Paul’s High School in Mandeville, LA. Graffeo will pitch at 86-89 and has touched 91. He pitches out of high ¾ arm slot, with an extremely quick arm. There is some effort in the delivery but he has good rhythm and tempo, with a short and clean arm action. Direction is in line, landing square and in an athletic position. The breaking ball has a nice 11/5 shape with hard late break, and good tight spin at 74-76. He will flash a change at times that has fade action with arm speed staying the same as the fastball. Graffeo is the typical pitch-ability guy when he has command of his 3 quality pitches. The breaking ball will be his go to pitch as he advances in the game, allowing him to project as middle to late reliever at the next level.

Tyree Thompson, Edna Karr HS, 2016
A 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-hander from New Orleans, LA with an extremely long, lean and projectable frame. He will pitch 84-86 mph and has been up to 88 with tilt and angle. Shows a decent feel for a breaking ball with 11/5 shape at 71-73 mph, with decent depth and spin. There is little to no effort in delivery and the arm action is loose and long, but the overall product is still extremely raw. Thompson is a well above average athlete with tremendous upside and as he adds strength velocity and stuff should increase.

Blair Fredrick, Brother Martin HS, 2016
A 6-foot, 180-pound left-hander from Brother Martin HS. A lean, extremely athletic frame with long arms and room to add strength. A simple repeatable delivery with a clean, loose arm action. Fastball will sit 86-89 mph getting up to 90 with late arm side run. Flashes a swing and miss slider at 77-80 with good hard tight spin and quality depth out of the same arm slot as FB. Has yet to see much mound time for the crusaders, but has already committed to Louisiana State because of the present quality stuff and the upside he possess.

Ross Massey, Catholic HS Baton Rouge, 2015
A 5-foot-11, 175 pound left-hander from Baton Rouge, Massey has been a highly successful high school pitcher. The brother of current Green Wave pitcher, Alex Massey, Ross helped lead Catholic (BR) to a state championship in 2013. A strike thrower that pitches 83-85 mph, running it up to 87 with occasional life. Loose, clean arm action out of a high-3/4 release, little effort with an athletic repeatable delivery. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape at 68-70, decent depth and has shown the ability to throw it for strikes. Flashes a changeup that may develop into a quality third pitch at the next level. Competitive left-hander that tends to find ways to help his team win, if the upward trend of his velocity and stuff continues he could be nice get for the Green Wave.

Utility

Brennan Breaux, St. Thomas Moore HS, 2015
Breaux is a 2015 LHP/OF with a 6-foot-0 180 pound frame from Lafayette, LA. Breaux pitches out a simple delivery, high ¾ arm slot, good tempo, and the arm works well. He will pitch 85-87 and will touch 89 occasionally. He has a good feel for a curveball with 11/5 shape with hard tight spin. In addition, he has a good feel for a change with some late life. He throws all 3 pitches for strikes and is extremely tough on left handed hitters. As an OF, Breaux displays centerfield tools as he is a 6.7 runner with good instincts and tracking speed. He makes consistently strong on line throws with carry and accuracy. He hits from the left side with smooth rhythm and tempo, transfers his weight efficiently, and the barrel stays in hitting zone.
