With the summer circuit finally concluded, Prep Baseball Report Louisiana takes a deeper look at the class of 2017. Today, we will take a look at the top five hitters of the 2017 class.
Led by LSU commit, Daniel Cabrera, and Mississippi State commit, Jacob Pearson, Louisiana???s 2017 class is loaded with quality bats. Louisiana is generally known for producing quality hitters year in and year out, and the 2017 class should be no exception. Although the hit tools of Cabrera and Pearson are in the upper echelon of high school players across America, there are numerous hitters in the state of Louisiana that could develop into productive hitters at the next level.
Top Five Hitters
1.Daniel Cabrera, OF, John Curtis HS(2017)
A 6-foot, 170-pound Louisiana State commit with an athletic, strong frame. Left-handed hitter with advanced hit tool, bat speed, quality leverage in swing, and advanced hand-eye coordination. Hits to all fields with backspin, smooth runner with tracking instincts in the outfield. During his sophomore spring Cabrera hit .566 with 6 home runs, 31 RBI, 10 doubles, 40 runs scored, and slugged 1.013.
2.Jacob Pearson, OF, West Monroe HS(2017)
A 6-foot, 185-pound outfielder with an athletic, strong build with present fast twitch actions. Outstanding overall athlete that runs an impressive 6.5 60 yard dash. Left-handed hitter that hits from a balanced, athletic setup with a smooth load, short stride, explosive lower half and excellent balance. Displays lightning quick bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 100 mph. Line-drive type hitter that shows advanced pull power potential. Solid defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange, plays through balls well, but lacks in arm strength.
3.Nicholas Webre, C/OF, Teurlings Catholic HS(2017)
A 5-foot-10, 185-pound catcher and outfielder with a strong, athletic frame. Left-handed hitter that hits from an athletic setup with smooth load, short stride, explosive lower half, and excellent balance. Shows a solid bat path with outstanding extension, gap to gap approach with power to the pull side and fluid rhythm that produced an exit velocity of 89 mph. Quality defensive catcher with soft hands, quick hips, blocks balls well, quick transfer and solid arm strength with carry on throws that resulted in a pop time of 1.87 seconds. Quality defensive outfielder with soft hands, fluid footwork, quick and clean exchange, and arm strength with carry on throws that produced a positional velocity of 81 mph.
4.Hayden Cantrelle, INF, Teurlings Catholic HS(2017)
A 5-foot-10, 165-pound short-stop with an average, athletic frame. Switch hitter that hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load, short stride, explosive lower half, and excellent balance. Showed a compact, flat bat path with line-drive, gap to gap approach with fluid rhythm an bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 81 mph. Quality defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, quick, clean exchange and plays through balls well. Showed solid arm strength out of a high-3/4 arm slot that produced an 80 mph positional velocity with accuracy on throws.
5.Preston Faulkner, OF/3B, Live Oak HS(2017)
A 6-foot, 194-pound outfielder and third baseman with a strong, physical, athletic frame. Right-handed hitter with a tall, balanced setup, smooth load, leg kick and solid balance throughout the swing. Line-drive type hitter with a gap to gap approach, fluid rhythm throughout that showed exceptional bat speed recording a 91 mph exit velocity. Defensively he shows soft hands, fluid footwork, a quick and clean exchange, playing through balls nicely and produces an 86 mph positional velocity from the outfield with a long arm action into a high-3/4 release with accuracy on throws.
