It’s been a busy four-plus months since the last update to the Class of 2019 rankings. Today we release the updated list, as the spring and summer season allowed the Prep Baseball Report scouting staff to track down emerging talent at high school games, tournaments and showcases. As we have worked our way through the summer event schedule, both on the state and national levels, more light has been shed on this talented and deep class. There has been plenty of shakeup throughout the list, which has now been expanded to 120 players. Here are some highlights in the update...
Louisiana State recruit, SS Cade Doughty (Denham Springs HS, LA) retains the No. 1 spot after another wildly successful spring and summer. Fellow LSU recruit, OF Wes Toups (ED White HS, LA), slides to the No. 2 slot, as the young outfielder has shown elite athleticism, posting a 6.65 60-yard dash and elite-level defensive ability in centerfield at June’s Top Prospect Games.
RHP Thomas Wilhite (West Ouachita HS, LA) has been a riser in the rankings ever since January’s Pitcher Showcase, checking in at No. 3 in this update. The strong 6-foot-2 right-hander’s velocity has also been on the rise, ultimately running his fastball up to 91 mph at last week’s Future Games.
LSU recruit, C Hayden Travinski (Airline HS, LA) could be one of the premier power bats nationally in the 2019 class. The physically imposing right-handed hitter showed big power all summer with the Louisiana Knights, and put on a display in pre-game batting practice during the ArkLaTex Tournament in June.
RHP Drew McDaniel (St. Thomas More HS, LA) like Wilhite has skyrocketed up the rankings, ever since his showing at January’s Bayou Preseason ID, ultimately concluding with his recent commitment to Ole Miss, after last week’s Future Games. The lean, projectable 6-foot-1 right-hander showed premium stuff at times this summer, running his fastball up to 91 mph, and flashing a potential firm, swing-and-miss slider.
Louisiana-Lafayette recruit, SS Carson Jones (West Monroe HS, LA) checks-in at No. 6, as the athletic middle infielder showed the ability to defend at several positions, as well as a simple, direct right-handed swing, consistently finding the barrel with a line-drive approach.
C Alex Milazzo (Zachary HS, LA) was, to many, the top defensive catcher at the Future Games, showing off high-level catch and throw skills with a pop time of 1.86-seconds and a positional velocity of 82 mph. Checking-in at No. 7 in the update, Milazzo’s recruitment has heated up recently after his eye-opening performance representing Louisiana at last week’s Future Games.
LSU recruit, RHP Cullen Pharris (DeQuincy HS, LA) checks in at No. 8, while RHP/IF Tom Biggs (West Monroe HS, LA) comes in at No. 9, and rounding out the top ten is witch-hitting 3B Peyton Lejeune (Teurlings Catholic HS, LA) after showing off a quality hit tool during August’s Future Games.
RHP/OF Jace Pendarvis (Central Private HS, LA) is a big riser in the rankings, up to No. 13, after his performances at both the Underclass Games and Future Games in recent weeks. Pendarvis showed off quality arm strength from the outfield, posting a 90 mph positional velocity, as well as athleticism with sub-7.00 60-yard dash times. However, Pendarvis has seen his stock and recruitment heat up with his recent performances on the mound. Pitching 85-88 mph, Pendarvis filled up the strike zone in Indianapolis, adding in a tight spinning slider at 75-76 mph that showed sharpness.
Infielders Collier Cranford (Zachary HS, LA) and Will Spears (St. Augustine HS, LA) also see significant jumps in the updated rankings. Cranford climbs to No. 17, as he continues to show the ability to stick in the middle infield at the next level, and as he adds strength to his simple, direct right-handed swing. After an impressive showing at the Underclass Games, Spears checks-in at No. 21. The athletic infielder posted a 6.83 60-yard dash, and showed above average arm strength across the diamond with an 88 mph positional velocity. Showing bat speed and strength at contact, the right-handed hitter also flashed potential power at July’s Underclass Games.
