Caleb Bruner, a 6-foot-1, 165-pound RHP from Logan County HS, recently committed to continue his education and baseball career at Morehead State University.  Bruner was a member of the inaugural Team Kentucky at the PBR Midwest Future Games in August and showed well at multiple PBR events.  Most recently at the Fall Prospect Program stop at WKU in October, Bruner showed a fastball up to 85 mph and excellent command of his sharp 70-73 mph breaking ball while racking up 6 strikeouts in three innings of work.  What makes him even more effective is the advanced feel he shows in being able to throw all of his pitches for strikes from multiple arm slots.

Bruner, ranked No.13 in Kentucky's 2015 class, has pitched well time and time again on the big stage.  Aside from his performances at the Fall Program at WKU and the Midwest Future Games, he was one strike away from pitching a complete game, eight-inning no-hitter against St. Xavier in the opening round of the State Tournament in Lexington in June in what turned out to be a heart-breaking 2-1 extra-inning loss.  

We recently caught up with Bruner to discuss his decision.

PBR: Why did you choose Morehead State?

 

Bruner:  I chose Morehead State because of the campus and the coaching staff. Coaches  McGuire, Brown, Stanek, and Johnson are awesome and I knew as soon as my visit was over that I wanted to play for them and be a part of what they are building at Morehead State.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

 

Bruner: University Of Missouri, Southern Illinois, Murray State

 

PBR:  Where did the coaching staff first see you compete?

Bruner: State Baseball Tournament in Lexington, KY this past season.

PBR: What role does Coach McGuire expect you to play during your first year on campus?

 

Bruner: To come in and work hard and to contribute to the team right away.

 

PBR:  Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

 

Bruner: My Mom and Dad have always given me the opportunity to play on competitive teams and travel. Also, Kevin Gettings coached me for 5 years in travel baseball and always gave me confidence and a Never Be Satisfied work ethic.

 

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most exciting experience playing summer ball?

 

Bruner: Knights Baseball (Nashville, TN). The most exciting experience this past summer was pitching in front of scouts at several of the tournaments.

PBR: You have committed to Morehead State before your junior season.  How does it feel to be finished early with the recruiting process?

 

Bruner: It feels awesome to have committed this early. I am relieved to be done with the recruiting process and that I can enjoy my last two seasons at Logan County and know that I am going to play college baseball.

 

PBR: You were a member of the first ever Team Kentucky at the PBR Midwest Future Games in August.  Describe the experience of that event.

 

Bruner: It was a great opportunity to pitch in front of a lot of scouts and to get to know some of the best players from Kentucky that I did not already know.

 

PBR: Logan County had a very good season last year advancing to the State Tournament before losing a heartbreaker in extra innings to St. Xavier.  What are your goals for the upcoming season?

 

Bruner: To win District, Region and make a run at State again.

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter you have faced in Kentucky?

 

Bruner: Ben Morrison (Bowling Green HS) who is now at Western KY. I pitched against him my freshman season and last season and I could never find a way to get him out.
