Today’s uncommitted senior spotlight is LHP Kellan Richards (’14 Olathe East HS). The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Richards recently attended the Kansas Prospect ID event in Topeka.
His scouting report from this event: “Richards has a very simple delivery with excellent body control throughout allowing his long arm action to deliver a high percentage of strikes. He throws slightly across his body that assists in his deception but had no effect on his ability to locate his pitches. He throws from a high ¾ slot with a fastball ranging from 78-82 mph with some arm side run. He features a 60-61 curveball and a 72-73 slider. His change-up was 70-72. Richards has good feel for all his pitches.”
The lefty has talked to a number of area four-year schools, including Avila University, Mid America Nazarene, Missouri Western and Pittsburg State. He has taken visits to Missouri Western and Pittsburg State. Sporting a 30 ACT and 4.0 GPA, Richards doesn’t need a lecture on the importance of academics.
“I’ve always been a student first and foremost but have tremendous passion for the game of baseball. I’m interested in studying exercise science or kinesiology with the hopes of becoming a coach down the road,” says Richards. “In college I’d like to play somewhere that has a strong program in my academic area and also play baseball, compete for innings early in my career. In addition, I want to go somewhere I know I can get better each day and learn more about the game and learn to coach.”
“Ideally I would like to stay somewhat close, within a days drive and, that being said, I’m not opposed to going out of state.”
The highly motivated Richards would also like to go somewhere he can continue to take part in Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
