The Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches (KABC) released their 2015 All-State teams earlier today. We are going to take an in-depth look at each class over the next few days, starting with the 6A teams today.
At the KSHSAA 6A state tournament the last four teams standing were from the Sunflower League so it is no surprise that the league swept the KABC top awards and is heavily represented on the first and second teams.
6A Player of the Year: Joey Wentz, Shawnee mission east
The KABC 6A Player of the Year is LHP/1B Joey Wentz (Virginia commit), a junior who re-confirmed this spring why he is one of the top two-way players in the nation while helping lead the Lancers to a 19-5 season. Wentz hit .414 with six doubles, a home run and nine RBI with a .521 on-base percentage. On the mound the lefty went 4-1 with a 1.01 ERA, collecting 43 strikeouts in 34.2 innings pitched.
6A Pitcher of the Year: Brandon Gomer, shawnee mission northwest
Pitcher of the Year honors go to Shawnee Mission Northwest senior RHP Brandon Gomer (Evansville commit) who, after spending his junior campaign bouncing back-and-forth from JV to varsity, put it all together on the mound for SMNW this spring. The righty went 9-1 with a miniscule 0.23 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 61 innings pitched.
6A Coach of the Year: Mike Hill, lawrence free state
Lawrence Free State’s Mike Hill was named Coach of the Year. A year after battling to a 13-9 record and getting knocked out in the regional final the Firebirds posted a 21-4 record and captured the KSHSAA 6A state title, winning their final 10 games in the process.
6A All-State underclassmen
As is usually the case high school sports end of the year honors favor upperclassmen and especially seniors and the 6A All-State team clearly fits this mold. However, two sophomores put themselves on the map this spring in Derby’s RHP/IF Tanner Olmstead and Shawnee Mission East’s OF/LHP Jake Randa, both were named to the second team.
