After losing their opening game to Derby in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Manhattan head coach Don Hess turned to right-hander Jesse Steinbring to reverse their team’s fortunes and the talented junior delivered - throwing six innings to get the win against Wichita East giving up one hit and striking out nine in the process.
Steinbring returned to the mound on Friday against Topeka High with the plan being to throw him a few innings to hopefully get the Indians off to a good start while also keeping him sharp for his outing next Friday.
Well, Steinbring had other ideas, of the making history variety, as the righty went out and threw a seven-inning perfect game. He used just 73 pitches and struck out nine Topeka batters along the way. For the week, Steinbring pitched 13 innings yielding one hit and striking out 18 batters to earn Kansas High School Baseball Player of the Week honors.
