Kansas Underclass Games: Middle Infielder's Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Kansas held the Underclass Prospect Games on May 31 at Kansas State University.  Nearly 100 players participated in the 2018 and 2019 class. 

Player profiles have been updated with video, times, velos and profile pictures.  Today we will take a look at the middle infielders performances from the event.  Although some middle infielders may have played other positions, this is just a break down of the performances at corner infield.  In the days to come we will break down middle infielders and pitchers.

Middle Infielders

Hayden Baumwart, SS, Emporia, 2019
Baumwart is a 5-foot-7 130-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.28 60 and a 4.77 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 72 mph. At the plate, thin stance, in line stride, opposite field approach, hand works inside ball. On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, high three-quarters release, soft hands, clean transfer, fluid footwork, hands in sync with feet, accurate throws. 

Billy Bechard, SS, Concordia, 2018
Bechard is a strong 5-foot-11 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.14 60 and a 4.48 home-to-first.  He has an 88 mph exit velo, one of the top RHH velos for the event. At the plate, slightly closed stance, middle to opposite field line drives, solid consistent contact during batting practice, some hand load, aggressive swing, collected two singles in game action. On the infield, 77 mph positional velo, high three-quarters release, athletic actions, quick catch and throw, fluid footwork, momentum through the catch, accurate throws. 

Toby Becker, 2B, Rock Creek, 2018
Becker is a 6-foot-2 170-pound right-handed hitting second-baseman in Kansas 2019 class.  He ran a 7.51 60 and got down the line in 4.77-seconds.  He posted a 78 mph exit velo. At the plate, swing produced middle to pull side line drives, starts with an open stance, fluid rhythm and loose hands.  On the infield, 70 mph positional velo, made all plays cleanly during defensive evals, short high three-quarters release, fluid footwork, clean transfer, accurate throws.

Chase Burgess, SS, Blue Valley West, 2019
Burgess is a 5-foot-7 140-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.08 and a 4.53 home-to-first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, barreled up balls consistently to the middle of the field during battng practice, loose and strong hands, quick bat speed, open stance, repeats swing, singled to left in game action.  On the infield, high three-quarters arm slot, quick footwork working with exchange, momentum towards first base to throw, accurate throws. 

Quinton Carlberg, SS, Lee’s Summit (MO), 2019
Carlberg is a 6-foot 150-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.14 60 and a 4.40 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 82 mph. At the plate, starts with an open stance, in line stride, gap-to-gap approach, smooth load, body under control during swing. On the infield, three-quarters release, quick catch and throw, mostly accurate throws, 78 mph positional velo, one of the top infield velos for the event, fluid footwork with clean exchange. 

Brayden Carr, 2B, Mill Valley, 2018
Carr is a 5-foot-9 150-pound right-handed hitting second-baseman in Kansas’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.38 60 and a 4.58 home-to-first.  He has a 79 mph exit velo, open set up, toe tap for timing, quick hands, mostly pull line drives during batting practice, level path though the hitting zone. On the infield, 75 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, fields ball in position ready to throw, quick transfer, fluid footwork.

Connor Chase, SS, Olathe North, 2019
Chase is a 5-foot-10 145-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.53 60 and a 4.77 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 74 mph.  At the plate, swing produced line drives to the middle of the field, open stance, controlled early stride, hands work through the ball, smooth load, gap-to-gap approach. On the infield, 62 mph positional velo, works behind the ball, fields ball in athletic position, over the top release, clean exchange. 

Cameron Chick, 2B, Hickman (MO), 2018
Chick is a 5-foot-9 165-pound switch hitting second-baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class, committed to Nebraska. He ran a 6.72 60, one of the fastest 60 times of the day, and got down the line in 4.64-seconds.  He has an 87 mph exit velo from the left side and a 91 mph exit velo from the right side, both among the event’s best. At the plate, attacks ball with aggressive sing from both sides, solid consistent contact, strong hands with with gap to gap power from both sides, repeats swing. On the infield, 80 mph positional velo, one of the top infield velos for the event, fluid footwork with quick catch and throw, high-three quarters release, accurate throws, quick twitch athlete.

Zac Cox, SS, Manhattan, 2018
Cox is a 6-foot 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.06 60 and got down the line in 4.75-seconds.  He has a 91 mph exit velo, one of the top RHH velos. At the plate, slightly open stance, aggressive hands, leg kick to load, line drive to whole field during batting practice, loose hands with quick bat speed, tripled to center in game action.  On the infield, 83 mph positional velo, top infield velo for the event, short over the top arm action, can drop down arm angle, quick feet aggressive to the ball, plays through the catch, athletic actions, accurate throws.

Joe Cronan, SS, Olathe East, 2019
Cronan is a 5-foot-10 130-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.31 60 and has a 4.88 home-to-first time. He has a 73 mph exit velo. At the plate, in crotched position, slightly open, pull side line drives, smooth rhythm, singled to right in game action.  On the infield, over the top release, works behind the ball, fields in athletic position, fluid footwork, clean transfer, 68 mph positional velo, mostly accurate throws.   

Brody Hanna, SS, Maize South, 2018
Hanna is a 5-foot-7 155-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.31 60 and a 4.78 home-to-first.  He has a 76 mph exit velo. At the plate, used the whole field during batting practice, open stance, gap-to-gap, loose hands, feel for barrel, in line stride, smooth rhythm, doubled to left-center in game action. On the infield, 72 mph positional velo, made all plays cleanly during defensive evals, high three quarters release, fluid exchange and release, mostly accurate throws.

Austin Hensley, SS, Arkansas City, 2019
Austin Hensley is a 5-foot-9 147-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.34 60 and has a home-to-first time of 4.25-seconds, one of the top RHH times of the event. He has an exit velo of 72 mph.  At the plate, open stance, controlled leg kick, no wasted movement in hands, consistent line drive to the middle and pull side of field during batting practice, singled to right in game action.  On the infield, over the top release, quick footwork, clean transfer and release, mostly accurate throws, 66 mph positional velo.

Brett Kennett, SS, Olathe South, 2019
Kennett is a lean and long limbed 6-foot-1 150-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.77 60 and a home-to-first time of 4.89-seconds. He has a 72 mph exit velo.  At the plate, thin stance, leg kick, in line stride, level path through the ball at contact, line drives gap-to-gap during batting practice.  On the infield, 71 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, field ball in athletic position, soft hands, hands and feet work together, accurate throws.

Gage Miller, 2B, Mill Valley, 2018
Miller is a 5-foot-11 155-pound left-handed hitting second-baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.09 60 and has a 4.08 home-to-first time, top LHH time of the event. He has a 71 mph exit velo, open stance, early stride, smooth load, no wasted movements, consistent pull side line drives during batting practice, singled to right in game action.  On the infield, 71 mph positional velo, quick catch and throw, clean exchange, athletic fielding position, momentum through the ball, high three quarters release, accurate throws, projectable frame with room to put on strength.  

Kadin Pearson, SS, Valley Center, 2018
Pearson is a 5-foot-10 150-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.31 60 and a 4.77 home-to-first. He has an 82 mph exit velo.  At the plate, open stance, opposite field line drives, level though the zone, loose and quick hands.  On the infield, 82 mph positional velo, over the top arm slot, arm works, athletic footwork, clean catch and throw, accurate throws, long limbed with projection. 

Dyelan Reed, SS, Concordia, 2019
Reed is a 6-foot-3 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas 2019 class.  He ran a 7.65 60 and a 4.38 home-to-first, one of the top RHH times for the event.  Has an exit velo of 73 mph. At the plate, balanced set up, showed power to the pull side with gap-to-gap approach, smooth rhythm, singled to left in game action. On the infield, high three quarters release, fields ball in athletic position, ready to throw, fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws, 67 mph positional velo.

Alexander Rice, Shawnee Mission Northwest, 2018
Rice is a 5-foot-8 130-pound switch-hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 6.86 60, one of the top 60’s of the event, and a 4.26 home-to-first, one of the top times for the event.  He has an exit velo of 81 mph from the right side and a 79 mph exit velo from the left side. At the plate, from the left side, middle approach, level path, open stance, simple and repeatable, stays on ball.  From the right side, middle to opposite field line drives, open stance, loose hands, feel for the barrel.  On the infield, 77 mph positional velo, quick catch and throw, high three quarters arm slot, athletic footwork, throw are accurate with back spin.

Brogen Richardson, SS, Salina Central, 2019
Richardson is a physical 6-foot-1 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.51 60 and a 4.82 home-to-first.  At the plate, simple and repeatable, no wasted movement, middle to pull side contact during batting practice, balanced set up, short inline stride.  On the infield, 75 mph positional velo, high three-quarters release, quick catch and release, soft hands, quick feet, mostly accurate throws.

Gunnar Sehon, 2B, St. Thomas Aquinas, 2019
Sehon is a 5-foot-10 150-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class. He ran a 7.58 60 and and a 4.52 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 75 mph. At the plate, middle to opposite field approach, hands work inside ball, feel for the barrel.  On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, high three-quarters arm slot, gain momentum after catch, quick feet with fluid glove action, accurate throws with back spin. 

Sawyer Slayden, SS, Emporia, 2018
Slayden is a 5-foot-10 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.07 60 and a 4.40 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 85 mph. At the plate, simple and repeatable swing, solid consistent contact to the middle of the field, short inline stride, some arm bar, level plane though the hitting zone.  On the infield, high three-quarters arm slot, gains momentum to first base after the catch, fluid exchange with footwork, accurate throws, strong and athletic frame.

Sam Tatum, 2B, Rockhurst (MO), 2018
Tatum is a 6-foot 165-pound left-handed hitting second-baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 6.95 60, one of the top times for the event, and a 4.31 home-to-first.   He has an 86 mph exit velo, one of the top LHH exit velos of the event. At the plate, solid consistent contact during batting practice, middle of the field line drives, feel for the barrel, did show some pull gap strength, balanced set up, controlled leg kick, singled up middle in game action.  On the infield, high three quarters release, soft hands, clean exchange, fluid footwork, 73 mph positional velo, mostly accurate throws.

Tanner Twillman, SS, Olathe East, 2019
Twillman is a 5-foot-5 115-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.68 60 and a 4.76 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 69 mph. At the plate, gap-to-gap approach, open stance, controlled leg lift, hands work inside ball.  On the infield, high three-quarters arm slot, loose arm action, hands and feet in sync, gains momentum after catch, mostly accurate throws, 68 mph positional velo.

Bradyn Wiens, SS, Maize South, 2018
Weins is a 5-foot-10 145-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran 6.92 60, one of the top times for the event, and a 4.52 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 76 mph. At the plate, balanced set up, slightly open, no wasted hand movement, level path through the ball, stays through contact, middle line drives during batting practice, solid consistent contact.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velo, high three-arm slot, athletic actions, plays though catch with fluid transfer, momentum after catch, accuate throws.

Carson Zenger, SS, Rock Creek, 2018
Zenger is a 6-foot-1 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.51 60 and a 4.76 home-to-first. He has an exit velo of 80 mph. At the plate, thin set up, in line stride, used whole field during batting practice, consistent line drives, loose hands with short path to contact, quick bat speed, repeats, singled in game action.  On the infield, 78 mph positional velo, one of the top infield velos for the event, athletic actions, quick catch and throw, loose arm action, high three quarters release, fluid footwork, accurate throws, long limbed and projectable frame
