X-FACTOR
Senior outfielders. The Cougars boast one of the more talented, experienced trio of outfielders in the state in seniors Casey Kelley, Nathan Reeder and Griffin Robinson.
NEWCOMER TO WATCH
Brennon Covington, RHP, 2015 (Johnson County CC). The senior righty has yet to throw a varsity inning but stood out in the late summer and fall seasons showing command of a low-80’s fastball and controllable breaking ball.
2015 OUTLOOK
An experienced Northwest club looks to climb the Sunflower League standings under first-year head coach Domenic Mussat. The Cougars are led by several returners from their everyday line-up a year ago including all-Sunflower league performers seniors Nathan Reeder and Casey Kelley; senior outfielder Griffin Robinson; senior first baseman Brett Ferencz; senior shortstop Paul Bachelor; and junior catcher Garrett Stephens, one of the few sophomore catchers that started for a 6A school last spring. On the mound, the Cougars lack a proven starter but have several capable options including two-way players Kelley and Ferencz, both right-handers. In addition, senior right-handers Brandon Gomer and Brennon Covington are likely to be in the mix for significant innings. Northwest has a deep junior class with a number of players that could push for playing time, including projectable right-hander Jared Marolf; first baseman Dylan Dirks, who could provide an additional left-handed bat in an otherwise right-handed heavy line-up; and athletic two-way players Matthew Drummond and Jamey Fisher among others.
