Summer Swing: Standout Underclassmen

Starting on July 26, I embarked on a baseball binge, traveling to five cities across the country over the course of 29 days. In that time, I went to Tampa for the East Coast Professional Showcase; Indianapolis for the Prep Baseball Report Future Games; Long Beach, CA, for the Area Code Games; Chicago for the Under Armour All-America Game; and New York City for the Metropolitan Baseball Classic. Squeezed between Chicago and New York were two nights at home where my clothes went from my suitcase into the laundry and back into my suitcase.
To wrap up the trip, I’m going back through my notes and highlighting players that stood out the most. We started with 2016 pitchers and position players. Next, we’ll look at 15 underclassmen that stood during my travel.
Daniel Cabrera, OF/LHP, John Curtis HS, LA
At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Cabrera has a strong, athletic frame with quick-twitch actions. He plays the game hard, but is more than just a grinder. He has tools and profiles well as a center fielder. He has loose hands at the plate and takes a good, quick path to the ball while showing a solid approach in BP. He went just 3-for-13 at East Coast Pro, but consistently put the ball in play as he struck out just once in four games. He runs well, routinely getting down the line in 4.2 seconds from the left side. Cabrera, a Louisiana State recruit, didn’t see any time on the mound in Tampa, but has arm strength and excellent feel for a changeup.
