Q&A with Huntington Commit D.J. Moore

D.J. MooreD.J. Moore, a 6-foot-1, 160 pound senior right-handed pitcher out of Homestead High School, recently committed to Huntington University.  The 49th ranked player in Indiana's class of 2015 rankings was impressive in June's Top Prospect Games throwing three pitches for a strike and showing tons of confidence on the mound. He possesses long arms with a loose, easy delivery.  At the Top Prospect Games he was 83-84 with his fastball showing good downhill plane and some arm side run.  He gets good action on both of his off-speed pitches. The low 70's slider has late break and kept in the zone while the changeup possesses good sink. 

PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose Huntington?

Moore: The reason I chose Huntington was because I thought it was the best fit for not only me but for my family to. Also I thought that the campus was the right size for me and I was comfortable with it.

PBR: Where did Huntington first see you compete?

Moore: Huntington first saw me compete at their field during our Sectional play.

PBR: When did you take your first official visit to Huntington?

Moore: My first official visit to Huntington was September 12, 2014

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play when you first arrive on campus? When I first arrived on campus the role they expected me to play was both pitching and infield.

PBR: Were there any other schools you were considering?

Moore:  Yes, there were other schools I was considering. They were Parkland, Kentucky Wesleyan and Eastern Michigan.  

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was your experience like playing for them?

Moore: This past summer I played for the AWP Sports Cubs and I had a great experience with that organization. All of the tournaments we went to always had tough competition.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Moore: The person that has the biggest impact on me as a player has to be my pitching coach Rich Dunno. Without him I wouldn’t be where I am now. He has pushed me to be the best player I can be.

PBR: You participated in the Top Prospect Games this summer, describe your experience playing in that event. I had a blast at the Top Prospect games this summer.

Moore: I was excited to hear that it was being held at IU on their beautiful field and that I had the opportunity to play on their field. If anybody gets the chance to be invited to the Top Prospect game I would highly recommend going because there are lots of scouts there and it’s an amazing experience.

PBR: Now that you have committed, what are your goals both personally and as team as you head into your final season at Homestead?

Moore: My goals for my upcoming high school season are to win conference, sectionals, go back to Regionals for the 3rd straight year and win that. I don’t really have any personal goals for this upcoming season I just want to have fun and play my best.

PBR: What were your stats last season at Homestead?

Moore: I went 8-1 as a pitcher with around a 3.00 ERA. My only loss was to Indianapolis Cathedral. I batted 0.378 with 1 homerun and 11 RBI’s.

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter you've faced in Indiana?

Moore: The toughest hitter I faced in Indiana was probably Treg Haberkorn. He was a very competitive hitter and crowded the plate. It was hard to get a fastball by him and I had to throw only off-speed to him.
