Updated Team Rankings and Week in Review

A look back at the week that was:

+ No. 1 Lincoln-Way North lost its first game of the season, falling to Brother Rice, 1-0, on Friday in a pool play game of the second-annual Steven M. Bajenski Memorial Tournament. The Phoenix (23-1), who won 23 straight, still remain at the top of the rankings for the fifth straight week. … Senior right-hander Mike Miller (SIU-Edwardsville recruit) has thrown 38 innings this season without allowing an earned run.

+ St. Laurence (18-6) moves up a spot to No. 2 after the Vikings swept No. 5 St. Rita in a two-game series last week. Junior RHP Brad Wood threw a no-hitter in one of the victories. After the Vikings swept St. Rita, they fell to Loyola on Saturday, proving once again how tough the Chicago Catholic Blue is from top to bottom.

+ Normal West (21-3) is one of the state’s hottest teams, as the No. 3-ranked Wildcats ripped off their 16th consecutive victory. Senior RHPs Matthew James and Nick Hieb each improved to 8-0 on Saturday with victories over Urbana and Triad.

+ No. 4 Mundelein (21-1) continues to win.

+ After getting swept by St. Laurence, No. 5 St. Rita (24-4) bounced back to run-rule Brother Rice on Saturday. The road doesn’t get any easier for the Mustangs, as they have a crucial two-game series with No. 6 Mount Carmel (22-5) starting on Wednesday. St. Rita, Mount Carmel and St. Laurence are all tied for first place in the Catholic Blue.

+ No. 7 Downers Grove South (24-4) finally lost a game last week when the Mustangs split a doubleheader with Willowbrook on Saturday. Downers South moved up three spots in the rankings.

+ No. 8 Harrisburg (24-3) enjoyed a perfect week and climbed three spots. With RHP/SS Ryne Roper having another stellar campaign, the Bulldogs look to be the preeminent team in Class 2A.

+ No. 9 Glenbrook South (17-3) rallied from a 7-1 deficit to upend district rival Glenbrook North, 8-7, on Saturday. See Illinois Scouting Blog for detailed report. The Titans also fell to Niles West last week.

+ No. 10 Naperville Central (16-5) took a pair from No. 21 Wheaton North (17-5) in a critical DuPage Valley Conference series last week. The two teams still have one more game to be played.

+ No. 11 Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (16-4), No. 12 Teutopolis (19-3) and No. 13 Huntley (18-3) all climb up the polls this week.

+ No. 14 Rock Island Alleman (17-2) dropped a game last week and fell six spots.

+ No. 15 Lockport (17-6) enjoyed a perfect week and moved up seven spots, and No. 16 Metamora (20-4) continues to look like a Class 3A contender.

+ No. 17 Carmel (16-4) falls three spots while No. 18 Sandburg (16-5) climbs seven.

+ No. 19 Ottawa (17-2), No. 22 Glenwood (15-4), No. 23 O’Fallon (19-8) and No. 24 Lake Park (19-5) all move into the top 25 this week. O’Fallon, red-hot as of late, moves into a familiar position atop the Southwestern Conference standings.

+ Lincoln-Way East (16-4) had a tough week, dropping four straight games, and subsequently fell 19 spots from No. 6 in the rankings.

+ Teams that dropped out of the top 25 rankings: Joliet West, Edwardsville, Jacobs, Downers Grove North.
