Leading Illinois’ strong 2014 catching class, Skoug packs a punch with his 5-foot-11, 200-pound frame. He blasted a grand slam in the Class 4A state semifinal in June, which propelled his team into the championship game, and carried his momentum onto the summer showcase circuit. He squared a few balls up at the Tournament of Stars in late June and then went on a tear at the World Wood Bat Championship in October. In Jupiter, FL, he earned MVP honors by going 7-for-11 with a double, home run, six RBIs and eight runs scored. He also walked eight times.
Skoug has advanced bat speed and hits from a slightly open stance and athletic setup. He credited his success this summer to improved focus at the plate, concentrating on having good at-bats as opposed to worrying about what highly-ranked arm was on the mound.
