Stock Report: 2015 RHP Jack Szott

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director – Illinois/Wisconsin

Jack Szott, currently ranked No. 52 in Illinois’ Class of 2015, is a physically advanced 6-foot-4, 225-pound RHP from Metea Valley HS. When he saw Szott in the summer he showed a highly advanced change up with swing and miss capabilities. He throws it with a purpose and conviction getting excellent arm side action at 73-74 mph. His fastball has sinking action at 83-84 mph and also displays a 70-74 mph curveball.

We asked Szott about his recruiting process and for Szott he has been relying on many of the experiences of his older brother.Jack Szott

“The recruiting process has been good. I have an older brother who plays Division 1 football so I'm familiar with how the recruiting process works.  It's a process, and time is needed to get to know the staff at each school.”

Szott has been receiving interest from a wide range of schools that include Big Ten, Missouri Valley, Big East and MAC schools among many others according to Szott.

“When looking at a college program I want an opportunity to compete and be a part of the team in a role that will allow us to have the most success. Another important factor is I want a program that has a winning attitude, a program that is always in the running for a conference title and even a spot in an NCAA regional and an opportunity to advance. The biggest thing I am looking for in a college program is an emphasis on academics as that is very important to me. Baseball won't last forever, so a solid education is very important,” he said.

Scheduled to take his ACT in February, he is certainly on the right track academically. Szott was awarded Academic All-Conference last year with his 4.0 GPA and has also received Metea Valley’s Academic Achievement Award for posting a GPA of 3.8 or higher for five consecutive semesters.

Szott has made visits to Western Michigan, Eastern Illinois, and Illinois State as of right now and is looking forward to his high school season.

“I'm looking forward to this spring and the high school baseball season, our team has great potential and a lot of great guys. We have 4-5 returning position players from last year’s team along with three returning starting pitchers and a number of other talented players as well. We are a team that gets along well and enjoys playing together,” said Szott.

Szott will be a big part of that success, as a sophomore he was called upon for more than 30 innings pitched, striking out 22. Numbers that will surely increase in 2014.
