Simeon Lucas has grown accustomed to playing under the microscope. As a sophomore, he helped power Grant HS to surprising third-place finish in Class 4A. The pressure has only amplified for Lucas, who entered the spring as one of the Midwest’s top draft prospects.
Undaunted by the limelight, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound left-handed hitter continues to deliver at a remarkable clip – just as he did as a sophomore.
Lucas opened his senior campaign by smashing his first swing of the season for an opposite-field home run against one of the top right-handers in the state.
And he hasn’t stopped hitting since.
No. 24 Grant, which played its first five games of the season last week, went 5-0 thanks to the scorching-hot bat of Lucas. The Illinois State recruit went 8-for-13 (.615 BA) with three homers and a double to open the season. He drove in seven runs, scored 10 times and slugged at a ridiculous 2.130 clip with a .750 on-base percentage. Lucas has put up the numbers despite having been walked seven times already.
“Sim has gotten off to a great start,” said Grant coach Dave Behm. “What is more impressive than the hits is his plate discipline. Being a Division One player and a potential draft prospect, Simeon is constantly seeing pitchers throwing him off-speed pitches and their best stuff to get him to chase. He has exhibited fantastic plate discipline and that has allowed him to get on base three out of every four times up so far. This type of leadership and skill has helped us get off to a great start.”
Putting up big offensive numbers is nothing new for Lucas. As a junior, he batted .500 with seven homers and 44 RBI. When Grant took home the school’s first state trophy, Lucas was hitting in the middle of the lineup, and finished with 17 doubles and 32 RBI as a sophomore.
The Porsche Exchange salutes Lucas for his hard work and success.
