Porsche Exchange Player of the Week: Mike Kornacker

If only Mike Kornacker could’ve recorded a triple last Friday against St. Joseph, the St. Laurence junior two-way standout could’ve had one of the most memorable performances in recent memory. As it stood, Kornacker enjoyed a day he can brag about for years to come.
The 6-foot-4 right-hander tossed a five-inning perfect game on the mound, then turned around to come a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. He finished the game going 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, a run-scoring double, and struck out six of the 15 St. Joseph batters he faced. For Kornacker, who’s verbally committed to Purdue, it was his second perfect game of the season.
But Kornacker didn’t earn the Porsche Exchange Player of the Week honors for his incredible one-day effort. No, he did it all week long, and did so in terrible playing conditions.
For the week, the right-handed hitter went 11-for-16 with four doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI. He followed up his Friday performance against St. Joseph by going 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI to help the No. 5 Vikings to an emphatic 12-1 victory over Providence in the Chicago Catholic Blue opener.
He also went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI against Bishop McNamara on Monday, and went 2-for-3 with a homer against Gordon Tech.
"Mike had a great week both hitting and pitching last week,” said St. Laurence coach Pete Lotus. “He drove in big runs for us in every game and threw one of the most dominating games of the year. To throw one perfect game is amazing, but to do it twice in one year is special. He had all three pitches working and was in complete control.”
For the season, Kornacker is batting .540 with a .940 slugging percentage. He has tallied seven doubles, three homers, 26 runs and 25 RBI. On the mound, he’s 3-0 with two perfect games under his belt. In 18 innings, he has yet to walk a batter and has recorded 23 strikeouts with a 1.94 ERA.
Kornacker has been an impact performer for the Vikings since his freshman year.
"It has been great to see Mike's development the past three years,” Lotus said. “He is a tremendously hard worker that plays the game the right way. The best part about him is because of his work ethic; he continues to get better and better every day."
The Porsche Exchange salutes Kornacker’s hard work and success.
