Luke MorganA four-year varsity player, SS/RHP Luke Morgan has been the catalyst behind Lincoln-Way West’s rapid ascension to one of the state’s top programs. The two-way standout has done it all for the No. 17-ranked Warriors, and last week’s performance was just a microcosm of his all-around abilities.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Morgan torched district rival Lincoln-Way Central in a critical Southwest Suburban Red two-game series last week. On Wednesday, Morgan struck out 10 and yielded two hits in a 2-1 victory. Offensively, he went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Then, Morgan turned around to go 3-for-5 with a homer against Lincoln-Way Central.

For the week, Morgan finished 7-for-15 with two doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBI. He also improved to 4-0 on the season while playing a superlative shortstop.

“Luke has been great for us at shortstop and on the mound this season,” said Lincoln-Way West coach Jake Zajc. “He has helped us win games for us at shortstop, at the plate, as a starting pitcher and as our closer.  We always talk about playing a successful brand of baseball by playing good defense, competing in the strike zone on the mound and consistently having quality at-bats.  Luke has led us by example in all of these phases this year.”

For the season, Morgan has tallied four homers, four doubles, three triples, 22 RBI, 21 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. Also one of the top defensive shortstops in the state, Morgan has also been relied on to shut down opposing offenses on the mound. He is 4-0 with four saves and holds a 0.80 ERA. In 26 innings, he’s struck out 38 and walked six.

Currently ranked No. 27 in Illinois’ 2014 class, Morgan is signed at South Alabama.

The Porsche Exchange salutes Morgan’s hard work and success.
