JOLIET, IL – What could Grayslake Central senior left-hander Kevin Peloza possibly do for an encore performance to his no-hitter in the supersectionals?
How about throwing a four-hit shutout in the Class 3A third-place game to defeat Mt. Vernon, 1-0, on Saturday at Silver Cross Field?
The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Peloza struck out six, walked none and needed only 68 pitches to lift Grayslake Central (28-14) to its second third-place finish in five years. Peloza (9-0), who will attend Bradley as a student next year, threw a no-hitter against Nazareth in the supersectionals and finished out his career with 20 consecutive scoreless innings.
In a game that lasted only 64 minutes, Mt. Vernon senior right-hander Tyler Ellis (8-3) was also stellar, throwing a two-hitter with two strikeouts and one walk. Ellis lost his no-hit bid – and ultimately the game – in the sixth inning when Justin Allen led off with a single and ultimately scored on Pat Burba’s single to centerfield.
“It was a well-played game on both sides,” said Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen. “Their pitcher was tough, but ours was better.”
Mt. Vernon concludes its season at 31-10-1. The game
