BURBANK, IL – The No. 5 St. Laurence Vikings looked primed for a deep playoff run on Saturday in their Regional title win over Simeon 9-0.
It was clear from the get go that the Wolverines would have no answer for Purdue-bound Mike Kornacker. Kornacker struck out four of the first six batters in his first two frames and would finish with 11 strikeouts on the day. The Simeon offense could only muster four hits and had just six base runners on the day.
St. Laurence started their rout in the first inning with back-to-back RBI singles off the bat of Kornacker and Roger Wilson. The Vikings hung four more in the fourth thanks to some shoddy Simeon defense combined with well executed Viking at bats. Two sacrifice flies from Kornacker and Rich Lamb capped off the inning.
Two more insurance runs in the fifth made the score 9-0 and Kornacker would strike out the side in the Simeon seventh to give St. Laurence the Regional Championship.
Brad Wood finished the day 2-for-3 with three runs scored in five plate appearances.
St. Laurence will move on to sectional semi-final play on Thursday June 6 where they will face off with conference foe No. 15 Mount Carmel. The Caravan are coming off a 13-0 win over Oak Lawn. Thursday will be the third time the two teams have played this year. The Vikings took the first two contests 7-3 and 15-6.
