No. 4 St. Rita blanks Bloomington 18-0

CHICAGO, IL – Despite temperatures in the high 30’s, and a blustery wind on the campus of St. Rita High School, the Mustang bats came out hot early and never looked back, beating Bloomington 18-0 in five innings on Wednesday.
No. 4 St. Rita (5-0) pounded out 16 hits, including four home runs. Junior outfielder Mateo Zunica led the way going 2-for-2 with a single, a grand slam to right center, two runs scored, and six RBI. Senior shortstop Marty Bechina (Michigan State) doubled and homered with three RBI. Senior infielder Matt Murawski (Webster) and junior Christian Pearl both came off the bench providing home runs: Murwawski’s a two-run shot, Pearl’s a three-run homer to cap the scoring in the bottom of the fourth.
Senior left-hander Matt Ryan worked four innings of one-hit baseball striking out six. Senior RHP Sean Jaycox struck out three in the fifth with one walk. Bloomington shortstop Deion Thompson (Western Illinois) provided the lone hit for the Purple Raiders, walking in his only other plate appearance. Bloomington drops to 0-2 on the season.
