CRESTWOOD, IL – No. 23 Peoria Notre Dame made a strong statement Thursday that the Irish are Class 3A state contenders when they knocked off defending 3A champion Marian Catholic, 3-1, in the second-annual Steven M. Bajenski Memorial Tournament at Standard Bank Stadium.
Notre Dame (22-6) then turned around in its second game of the night to narrowly fall to No. 4 Mount Carmel after trailing 5-0 after the second inning.
Against Marian Catholic (19-13), the Irish scored two runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Sophomore left-hander Jake Hurst (6-1), who’s one of the top-ranked Class of 2015 prospects in Illinois, took care of the rest. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Hurst limited the Spartans to six hits – four of the infield variety – in a complete-game effort. Hurst struck out four and walked five, including one with the bases loaded to account for Marian Catholic’s only run of the game in the third inning.
The Irish rallied for two runs in the top of the first with two outs. Sophomore outfielder/catcher Andy Shadid, who’s also one of Illinois’ premier 2015 prospects, started it with a walk, and quickly scored on senior first baseman Nick Bell’s RBI double down the left field line. Bell later scored on a throwing error.
Notre Dame added made it 3-0 in the second on Nick Arnold’s RBI double. After the second inning, Marian Catholic junior right-hander David Calderon settled down and shut down the Irish the next three innings.
Junior catcher Matt Kouri paced the Irish’s offense by going 2-for-2 with two walks.
More detailed information about the prospects in the game will be posted later in the Illinois Scouting Blog
