WAUKEGAN, IL – A cold day and two starting pitchers on their game, quickly turned into a pitcher’s duel between host Waukegan and New Trier on Friday afternoon.
The New Trier Trevians were able to scratch a run across in the top of sixth, for the lone run of the game, giving them 1-0 victory over Waukegan.
To lead off the top of the sixth, Trevians Dylan McGuire jumped on a 2-0 fastball from Jean Casanova, Waukegan’s starter, and drove it into the left-center gap for a leadoff double. Two batters later, Kevin Donahue came to the plate ready to hit, taking a first-pitch breaking ball and lining over the third baseman’s head for the eventual game-winning RBI, scoring McGuire from second base. The game saw a total of one run and four hits.
Senior right-handed pitcher Jean Casanova was the tough-luck loser on the mound for Waukegan (8-13) despite his complete game, 12 strikeout performance. Besides the one run Casanova surrendered in the sixth inning, he was merely untouchable. Up until the sixth inning, the projectable Casanova had only allowed one hit and at one point struck out five straight hitters. For much of the start Casanova pounded the bottom of the strike zone behind an 87-89 mph fastball. He also mixed in a 71-75 mph breaking ball and a 75-76 mph changeup, keeping the Trevians offense guessing. In the loss Casanova went seven innings, scattered three hits, allowed one earned run, struck out twelve and walked one.
New Trier (12-4) starting pitcher, William Jamieson, twirled a one hitter and did not allow a run to pick up the win for the Trevians. Jamieson sat 80-84 mph with his fastball and routinely dropped in a breaking ball for strikes at 70-72 mph. Jamieson, worked from a ¾ slot with easy effort and only walked one batter in his five innings. Jamieson went a total of five innings, allowed one hit, no runs, struck out four and walked one.
The Trevians return to action tomorrow traveling to take on Glenbrook North. Waukegan also is in action tomorrow as they travel to take on Maine West.
More in-depth player notes will be posted in the Illinois Scout Blog later.
