AURORA, IL – Getting into the Illinois Power 25 team rankings for the first time this week, No. 24 Waubonsie Valley was upset by Upstate 8 foe Neuqua Valley 5-1.
SIU-Edwardsville commit Andy Sommers was in control for the Wildcats working all seven innings allowing just three hits and striking out three. The one run Sommers allowed was unearned.
Drew Ellam got the Warriors on the board first with an RBI double in the first inning scoring Tyler Hasper who earlier singled.
It looked early like Waubonsie Valley would live up to their state ranking, as sophomore LHP Brandon Peteresen looked sharp early.
The Warriors carried their 1-0 lead into the third when Neuqua rallied for three runs, Matt Butler got the big hit with a two-RBI single which followed Tyler Tesmond’s RBI single.
Neuqua added two more insurance runs in the fifth, again with Tesmond in the mix adding an RBI single. The junior outfielder Tesmond finished the day 3-for-3 with a walk and a double. Tesmond scored twice and drove in two Wildcat runs.
Both teams continue Upstate 8 play this week with Waubonsie Valley taking on Metea Valley and Neuqua Valley will face Bartlett.
