DOWNERS GROVE, IL – Over the last several years it was commonplace to find Lyons and Downers Grove South highly ranked in the state of Illinois, with numerous Division I-caliber arms. Although both teams have struggled to repeat the success of years past, the cupboard was definitely not bare of talent on Thursday at Downers Grove South High School.

After leading early 2-1, Lyons Township used a five run sixth inning to push their lead to 9-1 and never trailed winning easily 11-6. Junior third baseman Charlie Harrigan crushed a three-run homer to opposite field during the rally, and finished three-for-five (1B, 2B, HR) on the day.  Lewis University bound senior shortstop Sam Cybulski finished four-for-four, with four singles and two stolen bases on the day, as the Lions pounded out seventeen hits in the Western Suburban Conference showdown. Junior second basemen Jack Oremus finished finished 3-for-5 on the day, pushing his season batting average to .457 (16 hits in 35 AB’s). Unsigned senior Sam Heilenbach earned the win pitching into the sixth inning allowing five runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

The Mustangs rallied in the bottom of the sixth off Helienbach pushing across three runs to cut the lead to 9-5, but couldn’t overcome the early hole. 6-foot-3 junior right handed pitcher Peter Hamot took the loss throwing five innings of four run (two earned) ball, striking out two, and walking three. Senior first basemen Chris Pedrak (Carthage College) finished two-for-four with a homer to left.  Seniors Danny Spinuzza, Matt Zinneker, and  junior Ryan Taylor all chipped in two hits.

Lyons pushed across two insurance runs in the seventh thanks to RBI singles by Oremus and Heilenbach.
