PBR GAME OF THE DAY
No. 3 St. Rita 10, Morgan Park 3
Chicago, IL – Senior RHP Max Franklin went five innings, surrendering one run on three hits while striking out five to lead No. 3 St. Rita (2-0) at home. The Heartland CC recruit sat 89-90 mph in the first inning and mostly 85-87 mph the rest of the way. He managed to keep the Morgan Park hitters off balance throughout the game with a steady three-pitch mix. Three-hole hitter, senior Mateo Zunica, was the biggest producer in the Mustangs order. Zunica had good at-bats all day, reaching base four times; went 3-for-3, 1 BB, 3 runs, 2 SB and 2 RBI. Junior Matt Verdun, the 2-hole hitter for the Mustangs, created havoc all afternoon. Verdun reached base in three of his four at-bats, scored two runs, had an RBI and stole a base. He also came out of the bullpen and threw the sixth inning. His fastball sat 83-86 mph with late life and arm-side-run. Also, mixed in a wipeout slider at 75-76 mph. Struck out the side swinging with two of the strikeouts coming on sliders.
Senior RHP Jarren Norman, currently uncommitted, started on the mound for Morgan Park. Fastball sat 83-84 mph with hard run at times in the first inning. Sat mainly 80-82 the rest of the way, dialing it back up to 84 on occasion. Four-hole hitter, junior 3B Donivan Williams, was the biggest offensive producer for Morgan Park. Williams went 1-for-1, 2B to center-field and 2 BB’s.
The game was 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth and still within striking distance for Morgan Park until St. Rita put up a five spot. The defining blow was delivered by senior 3B Ray Hansen, who hit a three-run homer to left field for St. Rita.
