Daily Roundup: April 17-18 Games

With the flooding across Illinois, only one game played on Thursday:

Big 12

No. 16 Normal West 10, Normal Community 1
In a game played at the Corn Crib on Thursday night, Normal West (12-3; 2-0) used the long-ball to dispatch its cross-town rivals from NCHS (7-5; 1-1). Wildcat senior Josh Appel and red-hot junior Reed Rogers, each hammered two-run bombs and Missouri-State bound LHP Alex Jefferson (1-3),fired a six-hitter at the Ironmen. The two clubs will square-off again at Normal West on Monday at 4:30.

April 17 Games:

Central State 8

Chatham Glenwood 3, No. 19 Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 2 (From 4-17)
In the wild and crazy CS8, Chatham Glenwood (6-4; 4-2) stunned the 19th ranked Cyclones on Wednesday. All three Glenwood runs were unearned as the Cyclones made two huge defensive miscues. SHG (10-3; 5-3) ace RHP David Jacob (5-1), suffered his first loss of the season. Jacobs went the distance allowing four hits.

Glenwood junior RHP Konnor Aherin fired a six-hitter at the Cyclones with four strikeouts and no bases on balls. Senior Mac Squib had a single and an RBI to lead the Titan attack.

Cyclone senior Steve Sartore singled and had an RBI while junior C Mitch Trees singled and doubled for SHG.

Mississippi Valley

Highland 7, Waterloo 1 (From 4-17)
Highland (13-3; 4-0) was led by its red-hot senior 3B Jake Harberer. Harberer singled doubled, scored two runs and drove home two runs, to lead the Bulldog attack. The future Eastern Illinois University Panther, is now hitting .462 with five bombs and 26 RBI. Junior Joe Duncan chipped in with an RBI double for Highland. Senior Austin McCloud (3-1) went the distance for the ‘Dogs scattering eight hits to pick up the win. Waterloo falls to 10-4 overall and 2-2 in the MVC.

Mascoutah 11, Civic Memorial 1 (From 4-17)
Mascoutah (13-6; 4-0) stayed atop the MVC with Highland, with a six-inning romp past Bethalto Civic Memorial (2-13;  0-4). Indian senior 1B Brendan Dauber had two singles and two RBI to lead Mascoutah. Senior Macias Milas scored two and drove home two while senior 1B Brendan Dauber chipped in with An RBI double. Senior Zach Lindsay (4-1) allowed one run and five hits in his solid five-inning start to pick up the win.  

Nonconference

No. 15 Harrisburg 8, Carmi 2 (From 4-17)
Harrisburg (17-2) scored six runs in the top of the sixth to blow past Carmi (5-6) on Wednesday. Senior Cody Hall had two hits and two RBI to lead the Bulldogs to their ninth consecutive victory. Sophomore Cooper Thompson added a single and an RBI, while University of Illinois-bound Ryne Roper chipped in with a single and a ribbie. Matt Phipps (2-0) allowed two runs in his solid six-inning start to pick up the win.

Congrats go out to Harrisburg’s venerable Head Coach Jay Thompson, on his 650th
career win.

Edwardsville 9, Centralia 1 (From 4-17)
Edwardsville’s (11-6) St. Louis University-bound Drew Curtis had two hits two runs scored and two RBI to lead the Tiger attack. Senior Jordan Heckler and junior Jacob Fisher each had two hits and two RBI. Tiger ace Zach Sparks improved to 5-1, with a stellar five-inning performance to pick up the win. Sparks allowed two hits with five strikeouts. The Centralia run was unearned.

Mount Vernon 13, Breese Central 3 (From 4-17)
Mount Vernon (16-5) breezed past Breese Central in six innings on Wednesday. Senior C Collin Young was on base five times, with two singles and three bases on balls, to lead the Ram attack. Young plated a pair or Ram runs. Senior Colten Meador added three hits and an RBI and junior Jake Pike chipped in with a double and two RBI. Junior Tyler Morgan improved to 2-0 with the win on the mound.

Waterloo Gibault 4, Belleville East 0 (From 4-17)
Waterloo Gibault (12-4) blanked Southwestern Conference tri-leader Belleville East (9-6) on Wednesday. Hawk juniors, Zach Neff (3-1) and Austin Beccue, combined for a one-hit shutout against the Lancers. Neff allowed the hit in his stellar five inning performance striking out three. Beccue nailed down his first save of the year firing two spotless innings of relief.
