Even as a seventh-grader, RHP Drake Fellows (Joliet Catholic Academy HS) was earmarked as a high-level prospect.
Two years, four inches and nine-mph later, Fellows had solidified himself as a premier national Class of 2016 prospect. On Monday, the 6-foot-4, 183-pounder punctuated his steady ascension by verbally committing to Vanderbilt.
Prior to making his decision, the sophomore had made a dozen unofficial visits before settling on Vanderbilt. Long, loose and athletic, Fellows enjoyed a significant velocity spike over the summer and fall. His fastball sat in the 88-89 range with, it seems plenty more in the tank. But the real separator for Fellows was his 78-79 mph slider, which has the makings of being a true wipeout pitch at the next level.
Although the updated 2016 rankings will be revised in the next couple weeks, Fellows is currently ranked No. 10 overall and No. 3 in Illinois. His commitment marks the fifth 2016 prospect in Illinois to make his college pledge.
Fellows’ commitment to Vanderbilt gave the SEC school a fruitful 24-hour window in which it secured verbals from 2015 RHP Chandler Day (Watkins Memorial HS, OH) and 2016 LHP/OF J.J. Bleday (Titusville), both top-level prospects in their respective classes.
