Woodbat Exposure Tournament- Game Recaps

On September 17 and 18, 2016 the Iowa Sticks Baseball Program hosted the Woodbat Exposure Tournament. 40 teams from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota played in 3 brackets (18U, 16U & 15U) at various sites in the greater Des Moines area in a pool play/ round-robin format.

In conjunction with the Woodbat Exposure Tournament; Prep Baseball Report Iowa assisted in reporting, player evaluation, and scoring updates throughout the tournament; along with facilitating a pre-tournament identification showcase before the event.
Below are the game recaps from games in the tournament along with highlighted player performances.

GAME RECAPS
Omaha Elite Black 10 Great Lakes Lumberjacks Black 4
2017 Kamen Mahoney (Concordia Lutheran), 2017 Jake Baasch (Bellevue West), and 2017 Nick Moeser (Bellevue East) each collected 2 hits including a home run; leading Omaha Elite Black to a 10-4 win. Baasch also picked up the win on the mound.
IA Sticks 14U Red 0 PG Royals 0
Sticks pitcher Mark Eddie (Storm Lake, IA) pitched a complete game allowing zero runs.
IA Sticks 17U Scout 2 Great Lakes Varsity White 0
’18 Drew Irvine (Waukee) and ’18 Ethan Mitchell (Grinnell) combined for the shut-out. TJ Mahoney collected 2 hits in a winning effort. For Great Lakes; 2018’s Jack Koehler (Totino-Grace) went 6 innings, struck out 5 batters, and only allowed 2 runs on 68 pitches- Jake Christiansen (Cretin-Derham Hall) was 2-3 at the plate.
IA Sticks 17U Scout 11 Complete Game 2
2018 Luke Yacinich (Dowling Catholic) pitched all 5 innings; allowing 3 hits. ’18 Nathan Chasey (Gilbert) had 2 doubles at the plate. In a losing effort; ’18 Cam Koeniger (Park Hills South) pitched 1 inning striking out 3 and 2018 Jordan McClellan (Liberty) had 2 stolen bases.
IA Sticks 16U Scout 7 Minnesota Starters 3
The Sticks scored 5 runs in the 3rd inning to break open the game. 2019 Jacob Craven (Des Moines Christian) pitched 6 innings, allowing 2 runs, and striking out 10 batters. University of Iowa commit, 2019 Peyton Williams (Johnston), went 3-3 in the game with 3 singles.
Nebraska Prospects 6 Great Lakes Varsity Black 4
For the Prospects; ’17 Zach Philbin (Creighton Prep) pitched 3 innings allowing 1 earned run with 6 strikeouts. 2018 catcher Owen Richter had a double and 2 RBI’s, 2019 James Valdivia was 1-2- scored 2 runs and had stolen base, and ’18 Drew Gilin had a 2B-1 run scored- and a stolen base.
Nebraska Prospects 7 IA Sticks 18U Scout 0
LHP Dylan Phillips (Creighton Prep), 2018 grad; went 4 innings allowing 0 hits, 0 runs, and struck out 11 batters. ’18 Owen Richter (Creighton Prep) had a home run and ’17 Will Hanafin (Creighton Prep) was 2-3 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base.
Twin Cities Baseball Academy 5 Sioux Falls Post 15 1
In a losing effort for Sioux Fall’s; Joel Swenson had 2 hits, Brayden Nath had a double, Austin Kubik pitched 3 innings with 4 strikeouts, and Carlos Caro pitched 3 innings with 1 strikeout.
IA Sticks 18U Black 7 Complete Game Padres 1
Padres 2018 Henry Gibson (Bishop Miege, KS) went 2.3 innings striking out 4 batters in a losing effort.
Sioux Falls Post 15 5 Omaha Elite Red 0
Kyle Gulbrandson went 6 innings on mound, striking out 11 batters, allowing 1 hit. Alex Fuhs had a 2-run double, Isaac Nelsen had a double, and Jack Simonsen an RBI single to lead Post 15.
Omaha Burke 3 Complete Game Nationals 2
In a losing effort; Jack Larson threw well on the mound going 5 innings allowing 1 earned run with 7 strikeouts. 2019 Garrett Pennington (Shawnee Mission West) was 2-3 at the plate.
Complete Game Padres 6 MN Hit Dawgs 4
2018 grad Brady Hale threw 5 innings allowing 2 runs (1 earned) with 5 strikeouts.
Waukee Warriors 17U 5 The Yard Outlaws 0
2018 Caden Ferguson (Waukee) pitched a complete game 2 hit shutout leading Waukee. A balanced attack had 11 hits by seven different Warriors plating 5 runs in the victory. Spencer Hanson led the team with 3 hits, followed by 2 hits from Brayden Maharry and Jack Boerner.
IA Sticks 18U Scout 3 Waukee Warriors 17U 2
The IA Sticks edged Waukee in a 3-2 game. The Sticks took the lead in the top of the 4th; courtesy of a 2-run home run from ’17 Derek Hackman (Johnston) and an RBI single from ’17 Robbie McCargar (Dowling Catholic). Cole Theisen and Jack Boerner each collected a hit for Waukee.
IA Sticks 17U Scout 9 Sioux Falls Post 15 2
In a losing effort; Aaron Nesbitt, Alex Fiegen and Carter Ades each collected 1 hit in the contest. Nate Nelson pitching 2 innings with 2 strikeouts and Fiegen went 4 innings with 3 strikeouts.
Great Lakes Varsity White 13 Complete Game Nationals 7
In a losing effort; 2019 Garrett Pennington (Shawnee Mission West) was 3-3 with a home run, Nate Palcher was 3-3, Clayton Noud was 2-3, and Adam Wellman had a double.
Sioux Falls Post 15 6 Omaha Burke 0
Justin Aldrich threw a complete game shutout going 7 innings while collecting 3 strikeouts. Matt Hedeen had 2 hits, Kyle Gulbrandson and Justin Aldrich each had 2-run singles, and Jack Simonsen contributed with a triple.
Waukee Warriors 17U 4 Nebraska Prospects 4
Waukee’s Spencer Hanson (Woodward-Granger) was 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI’s, ’18 Charlie Bandstra (Oskaloosa) was 1-3 with a double and 1 RBI, and ’18 Garrett Tigges (Waukee) was 2-3 with an RBI.
