Matt Cox, Catcher, Bettendorf HS, Class of 2015

PBR:  Why did you choose Iowa Central CC?

COX: I chose Iowa Central because of Coach Pederson and the success he has had with the program. I think he and the staff will do a good job working with me on my skills so when I leave I will be ready to play at the next level.

PBR:  What other schools were you considering?

COX: I decided early I wanted to go the JUCO route and get more experience. So I also considered Southeastern Community College and Heartland Community College.

PBR:  Where did they first see you? How did your relationship develop with the coaching staff?

COX: An assistant saw me at a doubleheader versus Linn Mar early in the year. Later on, the longtime Des Moines Dowling coach contacted Coach Peterson about me. After that, Coach Peterson called me every so often asking how things were going and set up a date to visit the campus. He made me feel like he really wanted me on his team and that meant a lot.

PBR: What role do you expect to play your first year on campus?

COX: Of course, I'm hoping to step into a starting role and lead the team to the World Series. But I'm realistic. I'm going to work hard my senior year and in the off season to make sure I'm at my best when I start playing for Iowa Central. Hopefully, I will be good enough to work my way into the lineup.

PBR: What have you worked on/improved since last year?

COX: Since last year I've worked on adding size and strength. I have a coach who plays AA ball in the Yankees organization and we have been working on building arm strength and focusing on my skills behind the plate. I'm hoping all the time in the weight room will make a difference.

PBR:  What are your thoughts on the recruiting process? Any advice for future players in your position?

COX: Recruiting can be very stressful because there is so much at stake. I mean, it’s an important part of my future so I want to make the absolute right choice. All the coaches treated me well and all had good programs. What made the difference for me was how long Coach Pederson had been interested and how much time he spent keeping in touch. He also gave a very good talk about what he expects from his players, where the program is headed, and where he thought I could fit in. My parents let me make the decision, but I know they were happy with my choice.
