Jacob Rojohn, 1B, WDM Valley, Class of 2015

PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?
ROJOHN: The coaches at Central have a lot of energy and enthusiasm for their baseball program and really made an effort to get me on campus.  I really enjoyed my overnight visit, getting to know the coaching staff and players, and felt very comfortable with the school in general.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?
ROJOHN: I visited Central, Coe, Simpson and Wartburg and met all the coaches, and also considered making visits to Concordia (NE) and Augustana (IL) after receiving invitations from their coaches, but Central made the biggest impression.

PBR: Where did they first see you? How did your relationship develop with the coaching staff?  ROJOHN: Coach Baethke attended a Valley game in July and then I met Head Coach Schirm and Coach Love shortly after.  They consistently stayed in touch with me through phone calls and notes, letting me know that they wanted me to be a part of the Central baseball program.

PBR: What role do you expect to play your first year on campus?
ROJOHN: I intend to work hard and do whatever the coaches ask of me.  I hope to contribute to the success of the program.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
ROJOHN: My dad has made the biggest impression on me over the years.  He has helped me develop as a player and knows the game inside and out.

PBR: What have you worked on/improved since last year?
ROJOHN: I work with the staff at Sportsplex West in Waukee year-round.  During the season, I take hitting lessons and during the off-season, I am at their facility 4-5 times a week working on speed/agility and strength/conditioning.  Playing with the Iowa Sticks and working with their coaching staff during the off-season has also helped me to improve my game.

PBR: Who is the toughest player that you have faced in Iowa?
ROJOHN: Ben Olson, a senior pitcher at Dowling Catholic, has been the toughest pitcher I’ve faced throughout high school.  He’s able to change his speeds and locations which make him tough to hit.

PBR: What are your thoughts on the recruiting process? Any advice for future players in your position.  ROJOHN: When you begin hearing from schools, it’s very exciting.  As the recruiting process continues, it can become somewhat stressful weighing the pros and cons of each school’s program.  Once you do make your decision, all the stress disappears.  It’s important to not only find the right mix of personalities among the coaches and players, but to also find a respectable academic institution that can meet your academic goals.
