Prep Baseball Report's Missouri Valley Preview event took place on Monday, February 15, 2016. The event was held at Ultimate Baseball Academy in Omaha, NE. The event featured prospects from the 2016-2017-2018 and 2019 classes who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and multiple coaches in attendance.
The event featured players from all over the state of Nebraska and a few from Iowa and South Dakota . Although Nebraska did make up the majority of the players at the event, RHP/1B Billy Mount (2017, Vermillion SD) made a impression during his bullpen. The 6-foot-1 220-pound physical right-hander sat 83-84 mph and topped out at 85 mph with his fastball. He showed the ability to throw two breaking balls for strikes and used his leverage to get all pitches downhill into the strike zone.
Two 2018 graduates from Nebraska worth noting were Dylan Phillips (Creighton Prep, NE) and Caiden Hill (Papillion LaVista, NE). Phillips is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound left-hander whose fastball showed life and late run. He also flashed a tight spinning breaking ball and plus feel for his changeup from his ¾ arm slot. Hill is a player we saw improvement from since the Western Iowa Open in August. Since the event in August 2015, the quick arm righty’s fastball has jumped from 78 mph to 81 mph. He repeats very simple mechanics and threw his breaking ball and changeup for strikes.
The event also had a couple of projectable arms worth mentioning as well in Chase Stebbing (2018 Wahoo, NE) and Hayden Bahl (2019 Papillion LaVista, NE). Stebbing (6-foot-3 165 pounds and Bahl (6-foot-6 165 pounds) are both long and lean right-handed pitchers who showed feel for three pitches. Stebbing works from a loose ¾ arm action and Bahl shows a loose/long over-the-top arm action.
The top 2016 uncommitted prospect was Alec Lee (Grand Island, NE). The 5-foot-10 200 outfielder ran a 4.88 40-yard dash and put up the top outfield velocity (84 mph) and exit velocity (92 mph).
+ SS Garrett Kocis (2017 Millard West, NE) showed a big arm from short, 85 mph, and a mature approach at the plate and in the field during the event.
+ SS/RHP Garrett Olson (2018 Lincoln Southeast, NE) is a right-handed hitter who registered a 76 mph exit velocity and showed a compact swing generating pop to all fields.
+ RHP Trey Kissack (2016 Grand Island, NE) had the top velocity at the event, topping out at 88 mph. The University of North Dakota commit repeated his max effort delivery and showed feel for both his breaking ball and change-up.
